Carmen with an E
My line is Carman with an A, descended from the Carmans of Middletown NJ.
There are, of course, a lot of misspellings and errors, but
recently I have been sent by non-Carman researchers, information with my
line, including my grandfather, spelled with an "E" which I have been
unable to trace the source.
In the past months I have been reposting Helen Silvey's archives to the
list (and, therefore, automatically to the Rootsweb permanent and
searchable archives.) In doing so, I have been rereading some published
work about Caleb CarmEn of Cape May New Jersey -- which I always assumed
was CarmAn of the Hempstead LI NY family of John and Florence Carman.
The most detailed is from THE CAPE MAY COUNTY MAGAZINE OF HISTORY AND
GENEALOGY, June 1945 pp. 283-290
"CALEB CARMEN (Whaler, Millwright and Miller)
(Builder of the first Mill in Cape May County) "By H. Clifford Campin, Jr.
which is located at:

Please reply to the list if you have any thoughts or references to add.
