Here's a Carman puzzle you may be able to help me with:
On 4 Mar 1812 (according to Dutchess Co. deed bk 27, p. 126) William Bell of Washington
and Rachel his wife
sold some land to Aaron CARMAN.
William Bell Jr., b. 1782, died within a few days, on 10 Mar 1812 @ 30 in Dutchess Co.
according to his gravestone in the Separate burying ground.
According to Will Box 743, the administrators of his estate were William Bell of
Poughkeepsie and Joseph CARMAN of Washington (Dutchess Co).
My first thought would be that William Jr, being mortally ill, sold land he owned with his
wife to provide for her support. Note that William Sr, the administrator, lives in
Poughkeepsie, and the William & Rachel who sold the land are said to live in
Washington.
But William Sr. (b. 1755) is alleged to have married, as his second wife, Rachel Jones (b.
1767) , dau. of Joseph Jones & Susannah Cornwall. And just to complicate things, the
marriage occurred 12 Aug 1799, which would seem just right for William Jr. at age 17.
So I'm left wondering if William Jr. had married a Rachel CARMAN, since that's the
only thing that makes much sense of it all.
Does anyone have any information on Joseph & Aaron of Washington, Dutchess Co, that
might help sort this out?
