The Garrett surname is French-Canadian and was changed to Garrett from Grenier about 1850
when ancestor Joseph Grenier migrated to Vt and then NY (due to anti-fr-canadian sentiment
at that time). Carpenter and Carman/Carmen lines English descent andnfrom New England- NY
area.
I do have bi and tri-racial lines I am working on. Brown would be the only one in common
with those you mention. Going back to Reuben Brown just after the War
Others are McDuffy, Cribb, etc. most from NC/SC border areas.
Cribb is a white surname but Mary/Polly Cribb had 1st ch with a Waucama Indian father
(UNK) and another ch with a Black father and others with a white (married ) father. She
was evidently adventurous and buried in a mixed race cemetery. But that whole family and
"area" seem to have many mixed marriages. Well, as you know, not marriages due
to the laws against miscegenation.
The problem I incurred was the children may have been known by the father's name but
on the census they had to go by the mothers surname as a marraige was ot recognised! So
the Indian Cribb surname became in that generation AfAm "McDuffy or McDuffie".
Makes it hard to track. But something to check out. I found they stayed in the same area
and so I had to check the census by the given names to find them.

Hi Sharon,
SEARLES,GARRETT and BENNETT surnames all connect w/my tri-racial family ancestry which I
am unable to establish w/o
hearing from anyone who claims kinship.
I would be so very grateful if you will contact me re: SC
info.
Have been working on this for 13yrs and have yet to hear from anyone who can provide info
of my WEEDEN,WHILDEN,WILDEN,WHELDON/BROWN AA/Native ancestry.
Believe that my ggrandfather, WM LAWRENCE WEELDON, Black,
may have been a slave of the WHEELDON/WHILDEN family of Christ Church, SC.
Sincerely,
carol wheeldin warren.
