The reenactment of the Battle of Monmouth takes place this weekend (June
22 & 23) at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, according to the Park's
literature.
There is an excellent map of battle in the papers of George Washington
site at the University of Virginia.
http://gwpapers.virginia.edu/revolution/monmouth/map4.html
My great great great grandfather, Samuel Carman 1757-1836 of
Middletown Monmouth County NJ stated he participated in
the battle in his 1832 pension application.
The stories I heard said they landed in Braintree, MA later moved to - and
apparently founded - Hempstead, LI. I was also told some early members of
the family were burned at the stake as heretics for being Protestant -
probably under Bloody Mary. Being Protestant probably wasn't that risky in
1631 when the first John landed here. By the mid 19th century there was at
least one Methodist circuit rider in the Iowa branch.
Thanks Tani
That is an interesting origen that is new to me.
There is a Carman branch which came over and worked in the mines in
Pennsylvania in the 1800s -- does that sound familiar?
Thanks for your contribution to the list.

According to my Grandfather who researched the family in the '50s, our branch
was originally Welsh and "car" meant castle (as in Caernarvon, Caerphilly,
etc.) and a "carman" was someone who lived within the castle walls rather
than in the village outside. Welsh friends have told me it is a relatively
common name in Wales today.
Favorite Carman myths-
Further to posts about King Carman of Iran, King Minos of Greece and his
triremes routed the Persians at the Battle of Salamis in 480 B.C. so since
the Karmen kingdom existed in 280, isnt it possible that it existed at
that time too? Carmans have been in America for 350 years.

Didnt know that. Does that have any connection with the Karmann-Guia?
In NYC there were regulations where carmen were required to repair the
streets. The 1680 Regulations for carmen in Albany stated there were to
be five and no more, appointed by the Mayor and Aldermann and were to
repair the streets without compensation, clear the dirt and regulated the
fees, size of loads, speedy delivery and who was allowed to drive them.
(This appeared in the Dongan Papers and were forwarded by Peter Christoph
to the Dutch-Colonies mailing list on 23 April 20.

When people tell me: "O, your ancesters must have pushed a cart", I say: "No,we invented the automobile." Carman is an ancient name. It probably had a meaning similar to Seaman: the Man of the Sea, the Best, the Chief. In this sense, african-americans employ the word "man" in one of its original meanings: the Man:the Police, the Power, the Authorities, the System. It's no coincidence that the traditional emblem of the Carmans is a castle tower. Thus: the MAN of the Karr, of the Fortified Place. So maybe just a caretaker of the castle. So what? All of us are descended from every caucasian that lived a thousnd years ago-princes,kings,farmers,artisians and caretakers. --Clarence Ellis Carman ---- Original Message -----

I got a translation of the Dutch message and this person, Peter Karman,
of the Netherland is
looking for descendants of the family from Bergen Op Zoom a
town in Western Holland.
Jan told me Carman is translated as cart-puller and there are families
called
Karremean now in Netherland. I've seen that name in the census, but wasnt
not in connection with Carmans.
Amazing that the name has the same meaning while none (except familie) of
the other words seem recognizable.

Marian--
You know about the region of Karmen in Iran, and the Karmen-Guia
automobile in Italy (Karmen was the designer).
The region of Karmen was conquered by Alexander the Great in about 250
b.c. and Ptolemy described the tribe as a fierce independent people. This
was included in some early 1910s and 1920s Carman genealogies. But around
the 1950s it was determined that surnames for the common man did not exist
until about the
1400s so we cant trace our ancestry back that far.
I was sorry to add the Karmen tribe to my list of "former relatives"
