The following anouncement was posted by Jim Folts, Head, Reference Services
New York State Archives on 3/19/02 (9:35:28 AM EST) to the
NYHIST-L(a)UNIX10.NYSED.GOV list:
Grants of land ("patents") by the colony and state of New York since 1664
have been recorded by the Secretary of State. The patent books and related
records have been transferred by the Secretary of State to the New York State
Archives. For information about those records contact the archivist on duty
at 518-474-8955, Mon.-Fri. 9-5 except state holidays, or visit the Archives'
web site at http://www.archives.nysed.gov (click on "Records and Research"
and search the online catalog).
Most of the colonial land grants are listed by name of patent and date of
grant in John H. French, Gazetteer of the State of New York (New York: 1860),
pp. 49-52. This work has been reprinted and is widely available in libraries
throughout New York State. The best maps of patents and their subdivisions
(statewide and county-level) are found in Julius Bien, comp., Atlas of the
State of New York (New York: 1895). This atlas is scarce and has never been
reprinted, but it is available in some large academic and public libraries
around the state. A smaller-scale map of patents is found in Robert J.
Rayback, comp., Richards Atlas of New York State (Phoenix, N.Y.: 1965).

Looking for information on Lucinda Carman b 1825 that married Allen Medlin b 1818. On one Census record the abreviation (Ind) was listed next to her name. I believe that some Census Records used the (Ind) to indicate a Native American but it is also possible this was used to indicate that she was born in Indiana. Allen Medlin and Lucinda Carman settled in Dade County, Mo. with at least Allen being buried in what was indicated as a Burial Ground not as a Cemetary. Any information regarding Lucinda and Allen regarding their parents, etc. will be greatly appreciated.

Dear History Folks,
The University of New Hamsphire has historic topographic maps on line.
Check out the following message:
Subject: More maps at UNH (http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/nhtopos.htm)
I have been remiss and not passing along that we have added many more
maps to the UNH Historic USGS Map site. There is now complete
geographic coverage of New York State with an image map as well as an
alphabetic index to help you locate them. If you have looked at the
maps of New York State that were previously available there are now more
editions (dates).
Also there is nearly complete geographic coverage of New Jersey. The
one quadrangle missing is one that as far as we can tell the USGS never
created a 15 minute series map. For New Jersey there is only an
alphabetic index but I am working on an image map and that should be
available before long. There are many Pennsylvania quadrangles as well
and we will be working on completing Pennsylvania. I have completed
scanning almost all of the geography of Pennsylvania with the exception
of thin slivers along the western border and southern border. These are
not all up yet but should be within the next month or so. At the moment
there is an alphabetic index available. The index map for Pennsylvania
is going to take a while so don't expect it soon. Over time I hope add
more editions of the quadrangles in Pennsylvania which is going to take
more trips to more libraries with the laptop and scanner.
Feel free to forward this on to other lists that might be interested
in these maps.
Again the URL is http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/nhtopos.htm
I've been using these maps for the last few weeks and the site is really
great!

I am working on the Carman line in the Maryland area-specifically the Harford & Baltimore County areas.
I have a son of John Carman whose name was Andrew. Andrew was one of eight children. It appears as if Andrew was of the few who stayed in MD. The others went south to NC. My Andrew was born 1761. I dont have the rest of the names / dates as I am not at home now.
Maybe a connection/ maybe not. Just thought I would pass it along. Ps. Andrew had a sister named Jemima.

I have in my possession an article about a rather dramatic boating accident that occurred on 25 June 1908 in Clayton, Jefferson, NY. It involved my great-grandfather, William Wells, his brother Edward, and their respective girlfriends, Nancy McGraw of Auburn, NY and Lulu Carman of Albany. William and Nancy both survived, but Edward and Lulu were both killed.
If anyone here is related to this Lulu Carman, I'd be happy to share a copy of the article, as well as a copy of a photo in my possession taken shortly before the accident of the four mentioned above. William and Nancy were both 21, and Eddie and Lulu were both 20.

For more than a year I have been trying to get copies of probate records
from the Johnson County Judge. Apparently, the lady in charge looks at
genealogy requests as the lowest priority. At least that is what the
receptionist intimated when I called and found her on vacation. The
archives are in a different building making it more difficult to
retrieve information. Couple that with the low priority and you get NO
priority.
I know that another Carman researcher, Cynthia K. Roberts, has copies of
the records and was hoping that she might be willing to make copies of
her copies. Unfortunately, the e-mail address I have for Cynthia no
longer works. Perhaps someone out there can help me get in touch with
her.
Maybe one of you has copies of the records yourself. If you do, I will
gladly pay for all copying and shipping costs as well as anything you
feel is appropriate for your time.
