Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
FYI, As of five minutes ago, the below linked web page
query is listed as no existing on Genconnect. Must
be those software gremlins again. I have never seen
Charman as a spelling variation used by the Carman Family.
Has anyone seen this spelling variation?

Boy this is exciting.
I have been off my computer for a week and I never seen so many post.
Good idea Dan.
My Carman line is from Gabriel Carman of Crompond, (near Yorktown),
Westchester Co. NY. From his son Peter Carman, my 3rd great grandfather was
Joseph Carman who married Mina Leete. They lived in Cairo, Greene County
from about 1813 to 1842,.
I know all from Joseph Carman to today, but just a few from the sibings of
Peter Carman and his children. Plus, it is not known (or proven) how Gabriel
related back to John Carman of Long Island. Dan always thought he did, but
there is a lack of real proof.
Anyone else from this line?

There were many heyday's.
First on FIDONET - pre 1994.
Then on Prodigy - pre 1995
Then I started one on the Indiana University Server, pre Rootsweb. 1995.
Then I changed it over to Rootsweb. 1996 or so.
Then Stan took over on a server he knew about (I think)
Then George took over.
Then another (I was out of action for a while)
Then Patricia on Rootsweb again. And another one too.
The list was busy in the early years, mostly thanks to Dan, Marvin, Stan and
many others. But in the last year or so, most of the Rootsweb surname lists
slowed down. I myself concentrated on more traditional reseach since I
didn't have much to share with others. I also didn't find many others
researching my own line. The list was good for shared research on the very
early lines.
Either way, it seems, that it's going along. Although Dan's knowledge is
tremendous, but it would be nice to see more discussion regarding many other
research. I have other lists that I am on with about 200 subscribers and
it's only about 10 who post most of the time.
I would love to hear more details about the history of the various Carman
lists from the past. Does anyone know how Helen in northern California is
doing now days?

From the Gabriel Carman line out ot Westchester CO, NY area.
I am not sure on the details, just my memory.

Thanks for your participation in the list.
I wonder if you have the present and past counties for St. James --
dont recognize the name.
I am planning to put a section up on the Carman Outline page, with
sketches of the lines of those who are on the list. Those who access the
list will be encouraged to post their queries, additions, etc to the list
for further information. I think this will protect the privacy of
subscribers, who will then be able to respond or not, as they choose.
Personally, I dont put anything much about my immediate relatives,
although a
cousin has innocently provided material to a researcher who has
innocently provided material to others ---
Hope this is not a repeat post.
Thanks for your participation.

I can do without cluttering my inbox with endless transatlantic bickering. This isn't helping my search for ancestors in nineteenth century rural Suffolk. I quit!

Still don't have this fixed yet. Again, I did not send the below post to
the list. It's a software program that evidently is activated by the owner
of the Genconnect web board.

Please forgive for posting anything, Mr. Carman. For a moment there I
forgot that you are the Grand Poobah of all Carman Lists. You know all!
You were there when the first posting occurred on the Prodigy Bulletin
Board. Right? Silly me for suggesting that we try to have a real mailing
list that exchanges information again. All that should ever be posted to
these lists are your criticisms of information posted by others and your
complaints about not being able to post or receive information direct from
the various lists. No one but you has ever posted a worthwhile message so
it was very, very stupid of me to make such a suggestion.
I kneel to you, Grand Poobah! Please forgive me!

Ray,
When do you consider the heyday of this list?
On October 18th of 1998. The listowner provided
the explanation of history of this list to that
point:
"Testing Site only. This list was created in August
1997 and was active only from May 23, 1998 until June 23,
1998. It is inactive and have no subscribers. It was
used for testing the technicalities of permanent
archives from October 3 to October 18, 1998."
The list actually activated for use in May of 1999.
So, is the year of activity as follows:
May 99 10
Jun 99 13
Jul 99 27
Aug 99 27
Sep 99 21
Oct 99 27
Nov 99 19
Dec 99 79
Jan 00 44
Feb 00 51
Mar 00 32
Apr 00 5
May 00 58* Still updating
Dave,
I am trying to work out your math. Roughly I have posted
51 posts to this list in the past five days. 34 of those were
related to Carman Genealogy, 16 addressed list policies or
problems (This included commenting on comments), and 1 was of
a personal nature (weather). So how do you define "handful"?

If you noticed, of those 39 posts by the one person you mentioned, only a
handfull were actually posts relating to Carman genealogy. The others
appear to be questions or comments on the administration of the list. David
