REPOST MAY 1995:
TO: ALL 5/4/93
FROM: HELEN SILVEY
SUBJECT: CARMAN,CARROL C.HALL
I copied this off of a "Round Robin" we Carmans had going in
1982:
Carrol C. (Carman) Hall in 1981, the 350th Ann. of Carman
family in America, published: THE CARMAN FAMILY, 1631-1981.
After giving early hist. of family, he carried out his line
to the present date. His group became Quakers and during
Revolution went to Canada, later returning the new U.S.
migrating West through Penn., Oh., to Ill. They settled in
the Lincoln country of Ill. and became identified with his
story. This volumn has been placed in a number of libraries
in the U.S. and a loan copy is available from Mr. Hall.
Since publication addtional info. about the years in Canada
and upper N.Y. state have been collected. Nearly 200
descendants of family held a re-union at Shenandoah, Ia.,
inJuly, 1981. Since publ. many new Carman contacts have
been made - there appear to be many Carman searchers, many
without much info. on their lines.
Mr. Hall has served as a clearing house for many Carman
searchers and is collecting much Carman material. Since he
is a V.P. of the Ill. State Hist. Soc., he is placing this
material in the Ill. State Hist. Libr., Springfield.
Persons wishing to have their findings preserved, may send
such material to him for library placement. Mr. Hall's
line: John (1); John (2); Thomas (3); Joseph (4); Adam (5);
Jacob (6); Samuel (7); Jas. L. (8); A.M. (9); Lucinda B.
(10), and CCH (11). Maternal lines: Fordham (?) (1); Seaman
(?) (2); Stites (?) (3); Unknown (4); Titus (5); Weeks (6);
Moore (8); McMullen (9); and paternal Hall (10).
Searchers in the Carman family are warned that much of the
early searching was in error as seekers sought to identify
themselves with nobility, etc. As near as can be
determined, the family originated Bishops Stoke Parish,
Hampshire (Hants) Eng. The wife of John (1) was more likely
a member of the DUMMER family rather than Fordham. Carman
was an occupation name, Car-man, somewhat the equivalent of
a modern truck driver. Kar-man, is Nordic and refers to
keeper of the storage room in a castle. Beware of the
Coats-of-arms deal, not likely so.
Carmans (Eng.) inter-married with the Dutch on Long Is.
and in upper N.Y. state. Weeks (6) above is fro the Dutch
Weekes. We have many Dutch cousins and some queer mingling
of the Dutch and Eng. names. The family divided during the
Revolution some with Tories others with Rebels. The family
has had many distinguished members inall lines of life.
Carman names appear all over the map, such as: Carman;s
Rivers; Carman, Ill., etc. We have many Canadian cousins.
During the Civil War they served from all sections,
possibly some in the CSA. Highest ranking officer, Ezra
Ayers Carman, Brig. Gen. A Carman was elected to the U.S.
Congress in the 1980 election. The New Jersey Carmans were
very loyal during the REv. but Bliff Carman's (the poet)
family migrated to Canada during the Rev. N.J. Carmans were
identified with Thos. Edison, both family and in his
inventive affairs.
Of course, you have heard of various plants, flowers and
vegetables named for the family, by the workers in those
fields. In Nassua Co., L.I., N.Y., the name Florence is
honed in 16 streets (5 - AVe., 3 Strs., 2 Roads, 2 drives,
and one each of Place,Lane, Court and Gate)
C.C.H.
P.S. Be sure to see the famous "Caleb Carmanis" on exhibit
at Lincoln in New Salem, Ill. CC.

Tonight's Chat - SourceGuide Online
DearREADERS,
You are invited to join tonight's DearMYRTLE genealogy chat to discuss the
SourceGuide which is available at the LDS FamilySearch web site at:
http://www.familysearch.org/sg
>From the publisher we read that the SourceGuide contains "Over 150 research
outlines, an extensive glossary of word meanings, and Catalog Helper."
Tonight we'll specifically discuss:
-- copying/pasting research suggestions from the SourceGuide to your personal
notes on an ancestor
-- why the SourceGuide is the quickest way to orient yourself to what's
available for the localities where your ancestors once lived
If you have questions about how to get to my chat room at 10pm Eastern US
time each Monday evening, please see:

Outline tree for Carman--
The dates I have for Hezakiah Carman dob 1745 NJ and dod 1803 NC do not
really fit in with this marriage date.
Also do not have information for Hezakiah m. Hulda Ayers
I found a William Carman in the tithables list in North Carolina in 1702?
Anyone
know anything about him? Did he have any descendants?
or ancestors in America?
Dick Eastman's Newsletter announced that Ancestry has added a Biography
database which will be free through August 15. These are 17c through
mid-19c biographies.

I have added an outline tree for some of the Caleb-NJ line and would
appreciate any comments or additions. I am trying to make a minimal tree
which will show newbies the main lines -- at a glance. -- if possible.
