In early 1800s a Joseph is listed as Carman and also a cartman. He is
listed at several different addresses in different years. In those
days there were laws which charged the cartmen with some maintenance
chores for the public streets.

A search on keyword "Carman" turned up 18 hits (some of them due to
individuals with the *occupation* carman).
