The following quotation, posted in response to a GenConnect Query on
Adam and Philadelphia Titus illustrates different interpretations of the
same lines -- and in the case of Tredwell, some citations which in 50
years became obscure.
William Stillwell Carman's "The Carman Family" 1880s mss mentions Adam b
1723 as the son of Joseph in Book 22. His brothers are given as Samuel,
Gabriel and Joseph. Book 23 is entitled Adam but has no ancestors for
him. Carroll Carman Hall's "The Grandfathers" uses the John, John,
Thomas, Joseph, Adam line. Henry Alanson Tredwell's 1946 mss "John-1
Carman of Hempstead, Long Island identifies the line as
John-1, John-2, Caleb-3, Benjamin-4.

These ##NOTES are now obscure. Who is Mr. Simpson? Where are his
papers? The L.I.H.S. is now the Brooklyn Historical Society and it is
being renovated (1998) and material is unavailable.
