TOPIC: SURNAMES A-L
SUBJECT: CARMAN-MISC. #3
These notes are from the Book "CARMAN GENEALOGY" by William
Sstilwell Carman. Volumes 1-6. per Linda [snip], 28 OCtober
1974. She said " All volumes were handwritten and in very
poor condition. Also I found the volumes to be repetitive.
Volume 6 had an Index, of sorts, which listed the names of
the Carman persons mentioned in these books, giving each
person a family number and a "book" number. This was quite
confusing.... Eventually I had to just go through each of
the six lengthy volumes and try to pick out the neeeded
infortmation. This book(s) is found in the New York Public
Library, Genealogy Room, NY,NY. Xeroxing was not permitted
due to condition of books."
Vol. 3. Booklet 15, page 3. "Caleb Carman was a Justice of
the Peace at Cape May, NJ in 1685. Later the book said that
Caleb was the First Justice of the Peace at Cape May. The
author continues to give other data on Caleb but confuses
his date of birth with the first Caleb who died yound.
Author says Caleb was born March 1, 1639 at Roxbury, Mass.
He married in 1661 to Elizabeth ____. The only child the
author wrote in was James and he did not give a date of
birth, The "penciling in unknown source" wrote the following
data on children of Caleb: James b. 1677; John b. 1662;
Joshua b. 1664-75; Ephraim b. 1679.
