With the different spelling the Burge family were early Hempstead LI
residents, but I know of no connections in Long Island
In looking at William Stillwell Carman's CARMAN FAMILY, an 1888s one-name
study, I find the following mentions of Carman/Burge marriages in New Jersey.
The daughter of Samuel-6 Carman, b. 1722 and Mary Wilson, Sarah CARMAN
married Benjamin Burge of Red Bank, N.J. Their daughter, Patience Burge
married Joseph CARMAN-7 b. ca 1782
(Benjamin-6,Samuel-5,John-4,Samuel-3,John-2, John-1). Another researcher
says Benjamin Burge and Sarah had the following children: Andrew, Benjamin,
Mary m. ? Brown, Elliner m. ? McClane, Phebe m. ? Swan, Abigail, Deborah
m. Thomas Layton in New York City on 17 September 1799. William Stillwell
Carman notes Joseph-7 and Patience-8 and having the following children:
Susanna
Thomson, Ruth Ann, Benjamin Burge and Peter Helm, another source adds
Andrew and Sarah. I place Samuel-6 and Benjamin-6 as the sons of
Joseph-5,(John-4,Samuel-3, who left Hempstead for Middletown,
NJ, John-2,John-1, a signer of the original Hempstead patent) Carman and
Deborah Burroughs. This line is quite "fragile" and facts are fragmentary
as with much colonial genealogy. My line claims to descend from Samuel-6's
son Samuel-7 who married Deborah Burrows.
Contemporary researchers, who are not of that line, may have different
opinions.
