Patricia,
On this list and many others over the past few years,
we have identified those genealogies that lack any merit
in Carman Genealogy. We have found those authors that
were simply out to make a buck as well as those that
embellished the family history with made up facts.
So, I ask you, why do you continue to promote the passing
of the bad information. Thompson, Pelletreau, Werner
and Bunker!! It would be sufficient to cite the books and
authors and state that current research suggests you don't
open the cover!
I disagree that authors were following the customs of
their times. Each one had their own motives for writing on
the Carman Family. Their motives did not match to a pattern
by society as a whole! For Thompson, Pelletreau, Werner
and Bunker, the Carman Family was only a small filler space
in compediums devoted to a broader topic. As for Banks, one
of his books which provided Carman information was published
after his death and that information could not be substantiated
through actual source materials nor notes of Mr. Banks himself.

Subject: [CARMAN-L] Those were the Days Part 5
It is my opinion that at the time the material about these fascinating
former relatives was written the authors were only following the customs
of their times and using the knowledge that was then available. After
Banks returned from his two year stay in England in about 1630 examining
parish records, and the fact that surnames were not commonly used in
England before about the 13c became widespread knowledge this kind of
information became discounted.
You could say that at various points in our history, genealogy
becomes popular. Then we see a rash of family histories being published!
Unfortuantely most are out for the buck. Amd most of the information, turns
out to be a rehash of the same old erroneous data!
Based on the large bibliography you provided; Do all of these
books contain Carman Family information????
Warmest regards, Dan
