Patricia,
I don't understand what you are saying here:
"For instance in looking at a 1820 NYC City Director
I found a lot of Richard Carman and Francis
Carmans, unconnected as far as I knew, and my hunch is
that the census taker knew of Richard , and his wife of
Carmansville a real estate development on 155th Street,
and just filled in the first names for some less
prominent person in another neighborhood."
You start talking about a City Directory, then you
refer to a Census Taker. What Census? In 1820 only
heads of households were recorded. So how does the
wife come into play?
Dan

Looked at your list -- and all those Williams --, and it seems seemed to
fit the pattern of the earlier 19c NYC lists I have seen -- a lot of
undocumented Carmans were around.and naturally they all had the same first
names. Hope other lists members will chime in with information. Hunches
okay as long as they are labelled as such. For instance in looking at a
1820 NYC City Director I found a lot of Richard Carman and Francis
Carmans, unconnected as
far as I knew, and my hunch is that the census taker knew of Richard ,
and his wife of Carmansville a real estate development on 155th Street,

neighborhood.
I will look at the 1881 Anniversary list and compare -- Valentine Carman
sounds very familiar
