I have permission to cross-post this personal email which pertains to
the Carmans in the Carman River area of Long Island, NY.

Hi Pat, I have been doing some TERRY genealogy for the
Terry-Ketcham Inn Foundation. We are trying to restore and make a museum
of this building, whose earliest part was built in the 1690s. Capt. Samuel
Terry[1773-1851] bought the Inn. His father was William Terry
[1750-1824]from the Stuart Terry Manuscript. William married MARY
CARMAN[1747-1838]. She died in Center Moriches at her son's and is buried
inMt Pleasant Cem. He died years earlier and I believe he's buried
inSayville or Oakdale. The lived in Sayville I believe.
Circumstantialevidence points to her coming from Fireplace (Brookhaven)
L.I. I was hoping to shed more light on this family through the
Carmanline. Regards, Van R.

Usually there isnt a catch with ancestry.com. that I know of.
As far as I know, they open different databases for a short time for free
and I understand, but do not know, that their service charges are minimal.
Being dedicated to the voluntary and free distribution of genealogical
information I have not tried their paid services. About $6 a month I think.
Let me know how you make out, the information is from their newsletter.
Just the URL http://www.ancestry.com ought to get you to a place you can
search if that doesnt work. I think.
Let us know how it goes.

If you live near the Carman's River, you must live in the vicinity of
Middle Island -- Have you ever checked the Bayles Local History Room at the
Longwood LIbrary ?
Although its collection is very small, they do have a lot of interesting odds
& ends of genealogy in there. The room is always locked, just stop at the
reference desk for someone ( prob me ) to open it.

Civil War Carmans from Carroll Carman Hall

More notes on Carman who served in the military.
This information is from Caroll Carman Halls THE
GRANDFATHERS, Vol. II [LDS Filmstrip]. Halls
work was published in 1981. He terms it An
anecdotal accounting of the Carman family. He
does not give exact dates, and has a lively
history of his branch of the family. Caroll Carman
Hall has preserved his family memories in this
publication.
Nearest of my Carman kin to serve in the Civil
War was my great-grandfather James L. Carman
sargent of Co. E, 14th Illinois Volunteer
Infantry. Sargent was the way he spelled it and
that is the way it is going to be.
Before going into his war record a look shall be
taken at his piece in the family history. James
L. was the only child of Samuel (6) to be born in
Illinois. He was born in White county during the
familys journey westward. White county had lots
of Quakers in it, many from New York.++
James was a babe in arms when the family arrived
at Sangamon Town in the Sangamon country and it
was in this area he was to spend the greater
portion of his life.
James L. Carman 1822 - 1887
James L. Carman, the writers great-grandfather
was about 40 years of age when he enlisted at
Jacsonville, Illinois on May 25, 1861. He was to
leave his wife and seveeral children at home. He
enlisted as first Corporal in Capt. Meads Co.,
14th Ill. Vol. Inf. This company become Co. E of
the 14th Regt. I.V.I. The period of enlistment
was for three years. On August 11, 1862 he was
promoted from corporal to sergeant.
He was discharged in 1863 for medical reasons

Hall gives the line of this family as John-1,
John-2, Thomas-3, Joseph-4, Adam-5, Jacob-6,
Samuel-7 and James L.-8

Here is a forwarded message regarding the Carman River Carmans. I have,
of course, replied to correct the spelling. Does anyone have this branch,
which includes Tredwell Fleet Carman, in their line?

This is the Rootsweb note explaining that messages cannot contain
attachments or html code.
RootsWeb accepts only plain text
mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text'',
and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists.
You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off
the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail
reader, or don't use any attachments. See
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for
instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail
programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help.
We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that
accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail
programs that are capable of processing the special file formats.
Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these
special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages
pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all,
HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on
RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format
produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers,
so we find it's best just to use plain text.

Please make any comments or corrections for these notes.
Following Matt Carman's suggestion for veteran's day, I am listing my
notes on military service from William Stillwell Carman's CARMAN FAMILY
mss.
Book 7 mentions Peter Carman, an ensign in the North Battalion Manor
of Courtland, command of Jeremiah Drake, and says at one time he was a
militia captain. My notes say his father was Gabriel who was probably the
son of Joseph and connects them to Carman's Hill in Peekskill.
Another mention in the same book is Henry Carman, Ensign in Lewis Morris
Brigade in the Revolutionary War.
Book 9 mentions Moses Carman, born around 1733 who as a private in
Liricas (?) Regiment in Morris Co. N.J. he died of small pox in the
Army.
Book 18 mentions John of Low Point, Dutchess County as a Revolutionary
Solidier
Book 19 - John the refugee who would not fight in the War and went to
Fishkill
Book 24 mentions Benjamin-5(Caleb-4,James-3,Caleb-2,John-1) serving in the
American Army
Hope you will add your own family, and make any corrections or additions
to these.
Regards
Patricia

Cousins and Friends:
In a few more weeks, on Wednesday, November 11th, VETERAN'S DAY will be
rolling around again. This would be a great time to visit a loved one from
the past who was a Veteran of past wars.
Last year, I took my two children to the Ivylawn Memorial Graveyard in
Ventura, California to visit my uncle's grave. James Bradford Doan fought in
the Pacific in World War Two while in the US Navy. We went to Ivylawn on the
quiet rainy Sunday before Veteran's Day and my children got their photo on the
front cover of the Ventura County Edition of the Los Angeles Times the next
day. This year, we plan to see the schedule events there on Veteran's Day. I
think it is important for them to know about and understand the past along
with a little of their family history.
Anyone else wish to share a story about Veteran's Day or an ancestor or famly
member who was a Veteran? Or yourself as a Veteran?
