One should be very weary regarding the many electronic databases being
placed online today. Web pages are popping up all over with variations
of data and in some cases the definitions are misleading.
Indiana Marriage Records have been indexed and placed online. There are
many Carman Marriages in this database. However, the index has been
described as being Indiana Public Records. This is not the case.
The database, "Database to an Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850",
was begun over 20 years ago. The project initiated by Dorothy Riker, the
late former Editor of The Hoosier Genealogist listed early county marriages
in that publication. It was built over time by volunteers and the Staff of
the Indiana State Library Genealogy Division.
The project is sponsored by the Indiana State Library Genealogy Division.
There is a disclaimer upfront that there are errors in the database and the
purpose of the database is simply to provide a pointer in your research.
Database fields do provide for a County where the actual source of the data
is maintained but is not specific to the actual location of the doument.
Do not use the dates without verifying from a primary source that indeed
the date is correct. As many of these database have come online rather
rapidly, efforts are being made to correct the errors. For example, the
Indiana Marriage Index database requires an exact copy of the marriage
license or return is sent to us at the address below:

The efforts by many, in the placing records online is to be applauded but
as genealogists we should keep in mind our primary sources.
This database has 15 marriages listed for "Carman"
0 marriages listed for "Carmen"
