Lynn,
I would check the 1850 and 1860 Federal Census for your Samuel
Carman in Suffolk, Co., NY. The Cenus should confirm that he was born in
England and identify the members of his household including the ages of the
various children. New York was unique in that it also ran state census for
the following dates: 1845, 1855, 1865, 1875, 1892.
To cover some other possibilities that your Samuel was not the immigrant
ancestor, the following Carman
Households were in Suffolk Co., NY during the 1800 Federal Census.
Joseph Carman's household was in Brookhaven 6 miles east of St. James.
Samuel Carmon household was in Brookhaven
Also, the household of John Lovet, the only Lovet that I could find for all
of Suffolk, Co., NY in the 1800 Census.
John Carman Sr. household was in Huntington 8 miles west of St. James
John Carman Jr. household was in Huntington
Samuel Carman household was in Islip 8 miles south of St. James
Hope this helps, Dan
