As a researcher of Nova Scotia railway history, I am attempting to
compile biographies of the more-than 90 civil engineers and surveyors
who assisted Sandford Fleming with the construction of the Intercolonial
Railway 1863-1876.
Many of these men have not been given the credit due to them for their
participation.
One of these engineers was Guy Colin Carman, about whom little can be
found. I do know he was at Trois Pistoles, Quebec in 1871. He my have
been an American, or came directly from Britain (several of the
engineers did).
Something as basic as an obituary would be an enormous help in my
research.
If most of these men were of similar age, their deaths would
start occurring 1910-1920.
This project was originally intended as an article for Canadian Rail
magazine, the journal of the Canadian Railway Historical Association,
but
with so little information available about many of them, it will take
considerably longer than anticipated, and given the careers of those I
have found already, could develop into a book-length manuscript.
I have already tried the search engines of the National Archives,
National Library, Early Canadiana Online and the Dictionary of
Canadian Biography Online.
I am further hampered by my sight impairedness, so any assistance you
could offer would be greatly appreciated, and of course acknowledged.
Sincerely
Jay Underwood
