So you see I am fortunate to have at lease something to start with and I am
happy it
is typewritten - I do wish I had thought to ask questions in 1976 when he
gave it to me -
Having grown up in Long Island, New York and New Jersey I am familiar with
the areas
that are mentioned and I am pretty much familiar with the last group of names
although
I have not seen them since I was a wee lass - guess you could say we were the
outcasts - I'm
under the impression that my father's family (Lawrence Albert Carman) didn't
like him
and therefore I never really knew them. I do remember Theodore traveling to
CT in the
mid 1970's to close down his spinster Aunts house - must have been Emma and
Alice.
If anyone has anything on these people I would appreciate the clues if not
then just
ignore and I will get busy. Thank You.

The Pennsylvania Gazette
Baltimore Iron works, April 28, 1760
RUN away, last night, three convict servant men, viz. Richard
<< Carman>> , a middle aged mane, pale complexioned, well set, and
speaks in the West County dialect: Had on a dirty frock, of
twilled linen, and his other apparel is such as servants
commonly wear, and very dirty, as he worked at the coaling
business. --- John << Carman>> , a lusty lubberly fellow, and
brother to the above named Richard, is about 30 years of age,
of a fresh complexion, and speaks in the West Country dialect:
His apparel is coarse and dirty. --- James Singewood,
belonging to Col. Benjamin Tasker, came into the country this
year; he is about 30 years of age, brown complexioned, a
middle sized man, well set, and stoops much in the shoulders:
Has a parcel of greasy cloaths, which he brought with him from
the ship, and two white shirts: He is an Englishman. Whoever
secures the said Convicts, in any Goal, so that they may be
had again, shall have Fifty Shillings reward for each, or
either, if taken in this province, and if out of the province
Four Pounds for each, and reasonable charges, if brought home.
BENJAMIN YOUNG, R. CROXALL.
N.B. Richard and John << Carman>> are weavers by trade. They
all may steal other apparel, and change their names.
*** The said Croxall has a tract of good land for farming
to sell at Little Pipe Creek, of about 500 Acres, about 20
miles from Frederic town, in Maryland, and not more than 35
miles from the flourishing town of Baltimore. The said land is
well stocked with timber and limestone, and several good
springs on it.
Lynn,
Your Carman Line is new to me. To aid in trying to pinpoint
your group of Carmans, the following would help:

What information do you have to prove Samuel Carman was born in
England? Samuel was a prominent name for many Carmans in New Jersey.
What are the names of the 11 children? Naming conventions can help
tracking a family line.
St. James is in Suffolk County on Eastern Long Island near Smithtown.
Do you know where in New Jersey they migrated from? Did Samuel
marry on Long Island or in New Jersey?
