My husband's gggrandfather, Frederick Carmack m Martha Ann Edwards in
Russell County, AL formed from Creek and Cherokee Cessions of the 1830's.
Following is condensed story. THE HISTORY OF OPELIKA, Author: Rev F L
Cherry.
Martha, age 11, records how her brother, Jimmie, 7 years old was shot and
killed by an Indian, named Pen Calley, walking behind Jimmie and her
but a few feet away.
Then told her to go or he would kill her. Her father, Berry Edwards,
assisted by his
neighbors caught him but the cunning savage affected his escape.

In 1836 Mr Edwards having planted his crop and hostilities having
commenced in May was compelled to leave all in short order and carry his
family to a place of safety in Georgia. He returned to his acreage with a
Alexander Goolsby and both were
fired upon by cowardly savages. Both men died.
It is on record that General Jackson recommended to Congress that an
appropriation
should be made for benefit of the widows and children of those who
suffered from the depredations of Indians at this period of history of
Alabama. An assessment of Mr
Edwards losses were made and fixed at $800. But no appropriation was
ever realized by Mr Edwards" children.
