Hi all, The double s is often written as "fs" rather than "ss". I
found the
double s explanation a while ago and then found the following URL which
shows it and more information on old handwriting:
http://www.firstct.com/fv/oldhand.html
Check it out, it is interesting.
hope this helps,
dale

Carmack Gang,
........ Dale, any explaination for the different spelling of
Jesse/Jessie/Jefse

Beau, Dale, and Gang:
I'm probably the last one in the group to figure this out, but here goes.
I had also noticed, even in families other than Carmack, that the name
Jesse was sometimes spelled Jefse. Last night I was reading a handwritten
will dated 1819 in Russell Co, VA. (Beautiful handwriting, but hard to
read.) The name "Russell" was written to look like "Rufsell", and in
the
phrase "it hath pleased God to bless me with", the word "bless" looked
like
"blefs".
Do we have any handwriting experts out there? Was the double S always
written in this manner in the early 1800's? --Gail
