Hi all you Carmack researchers!
The idea is, for anyone who wishes to participate, to
send an email to the List identifing thier Most
Wanted Carmack.
---------------------------
I don't know that I have a "most wanted" Carmack, but I do need help in
sorting out the John Carmacks. I have several John Carmacks that I am
trying to match up with the facts:
JOHN CARMACK b. 1720 (another source says 1710) in MD
JOHN CARMACK b. 12 May 1742 in Frederick Co, MD
JOHN CARMACK b. 1757-1758 (age 74-75 in 1832)--Which John is this?
JOHN CARMACK who m. Mary Daughtery in 1789; moved to Bledsoe Co, TN
-------------
From "A History of Campbell Co, TN" published by LaFollette
Publ. Co.:
"Among the acquaintances of Colonel Arthur Campbell were JOHN
CARMACK who
entered land opposite Cumberland Gap in 1780..." (My note: Cumberland
Gap is the pass through the mountains from Lee Co, VA into KY. Lee Co was
formed in 1792-93 from Russell & Scott, and they were originally part of
Washington Co, VA.)
-----------
JOHN CARMACK of Washington Co, VA made a will dated 27 Aug 1810 & proved 19
May 1812. His wife was living, but not named. One of the witnesses to
this will was Arthur Campbell. (One source says this is John b. 1720.
Did he make his will when he was 90 years old?)
--------------
Rev. War Pension of JOHN CARMACK, NC--W 3772
Guilford Co, NC, 29 May 1832, personally appeared JOHN CARMACK, age 74.
Enlisted in Hillsboro, County of Orange, Nov 1, 1781.
-----------------
DECLARATION FOR PENSION: " Washington Co, VA ..22nd day of Oct 1832
personally appeared ...JOHN CARMACK, SR....age 74 or 75 years. ..States he
was b. Frederick Co, MD (and) that his father removed to Washington Co. in
the year 1773." (Military service listed) "...This affiant also served
as a volunteer against the Cherokee Indians under the command of Col.
Campbell in the year 1780..."
(I believe that his pension claim was rejected in Washington Co. Is this
the same John Carmack who had applied for a pension in North Carolina the
previous May? According to his affidavit(s), he was born ca 1758. And is
this the same John whose will was proved the following year 1833?)
-----------------
JOHN CARMACK of Washington Co, VA--will dated 31 Mar 1832, proved 27 May
1833. Names wife Elizabeth. Children: Thomas, Polly, Betsy, Margaret,
Joseph, Pleasant, Sarah Gray, Jane Thomas, Susannah Scribe.
(This John would have been born 1757-1758.)
