A change has recently been made to Rootsweb, the host for our Carmack
discussion group. I do not think our list members have had this problem but
just so everyone knows, here is what happened:
Effective immediately, SmartList (our Rootsweb list server) will begin to
reject
messages (all mail sent to "carmack"-l(a)rootsweb.com) back to the poster
if SmartList detects any file attachments (including VCARDS), HTML messages
and enriched text postings.
To ensure your messages reach the list, please do the following:
1. Make sure you do not post anything in HTML
if you are using Netscape Communicator Mail,
you change this
"Edit"
"Preferances"
"Mail & Groups Messages"
"More Options"
third window, select text only
if you are using Netscape Navigator, no change should
be required
if you are using Microsoft Outlook Express
you change this
"Tools"
"Options"
"Send"
Select Mail Sending Format to Plain Text
if you are using any other mail reader, contact
your service provider for assistance
If you are using a WEBTV interface, don't use the signatures
encouraged by WEBTV for messages to the lists on rootsweb -
they are in HTML & will be rejected by our list server
2. Don't attach any messages or forward messages to the list
Instead do a "reply to" & change the "To" address
to
the list address - make sure the "forwarded" messages
are on topic for the surname
remember: no chain letters, virus warnings,
etcetera & so on...If you are unsure
send a message to the list sponsor (me) &
ask
3. Never attach a GEDCOM to your message - we have a size limit
on messages that go through SmartList. One option is to send
the GEDCOM directly to the intended recipient, not the list.
Another option is to, get a free website at
http://www.geocities.com,
http://www.angelfire.com,
http://www.tripod.com,
or any other of a number of free website hosts
Convert your GedCom to HTML using a conversion tool
like Gendex's Ged2HTML (
http://www.gendex.com/ged2html/)
GedPage
http://www.frontiernet.net/~rjacob/gedpage.htm
or others listed at Cyndi's List
http://www.CyndisList.com/software.htm
(BTW, everyone doing genealogy online probably knows about
Cyndi's list at
http://www.CyndisList.com bookmarked - it's
a good resource!)
Then after you have your info online, send the URL to the
list... I have not tried this myself but I put it out for
your information.
If there are any questions let me know.
