RE: Cardin Carmack's request for errors found in The Carmack Family
Genealogy book by Charles Peckham:
Below are some of the errors I have found in my line:
p. 85 - Evan Carmack, b. 2/25/1740 was born in Prince George's County,
MD (Frederick Co. didn't exist yet). I question the death date of 1830
in Wheeling, WV as this would make him 90 years old when he died (not
impossible but improbable).
P 115 - Peter Carmack, son of Evan & Mary Wolfe Carmack
A "cousin" has joined the DAR & Daughter of American Colonists as a
descendant of Peter & Rosanna Carmack. There is a Rosanna living in
Bedford Co, PA in 1820 as the head of the household.
Children: (1) Abraham was born in Frederick City, MD; (2) Daniel (my
line) was born in Frederick Co, MD & married Catherine Appleman;
(Peckham's book lists Catherine as Daniel's wife & as his sister) (3)
Margaret Carmack b. 1805 in PA, died after 1850, married John Appleman
(Catherine's brother); (4) Rachel Carmack b. 1810 in PA, d. after 1860,
married William Slick; (5) Susanna Carmack was born in PA; (6) Peter M.
Carmack b. 1812 in St. Clairsville, Bedford Co, PA, died 12/11/1887 in
Perrysville, Ashland Co, OH; (7) Maria Carmack, b. 1815 in PA died
7/15/1905 married (1) George Dobson & (2) Joseph Fisher; (8) Elizabeth
Carmack died before 1848 & married Mr. Rimbey. References available
upon request.
Peckham's book has Ann Carmack (I've never seen her mentioned before) &
Simpson Carmack as children of Peter. Simpson was not a son, he may
have been an illegitimate nephew (a theory put forth by a descendant of
Simpson's who has been researching him for years).
Also, regarding the quotation from the Washington County History, I have
a copy of the article from the book & it reads:
"Peter Carmack, the first of the family known to have been born in
America, was reared and married somewhere 'east of the mountains,' and
in an early day came to Bedford county, Penn., settling in the town of
St. Clairsville, where he followed his trade of shoemaker during the
rest of his life. He was in politics an Old-line Whig. The children
born to him, eight in number, were Abraham, Daniel, Peter, Rachel,
Susanna, Maria, and two whose names are now unknown."
