Hi Ruth,
Answering your questions as best I can.
Per Greene Lee Permenta: I don't know except that Greene was a
Revolutionary hero and a county of TN just south of Hawkins. Merely
speculation.
The ref. to 1 M (-5) means under 5 yr. of age. Greene would have been 3 yrs
old. Sarah would have been 46 when she gave birth. This late age for
birthing has troubled me too. A possible explanation may be found in the
Probate record of John Carmack, living in Henry Co. in 1830 and dying in
1833. It states: "...Agreeable to an order of Court to us directed from the
worshipful Court of said County September Term 1833. We the Commissioners
have this day proceeded to examine the papers relative to the estate of John
Cormack just died in the hands of William Carmack (jr) and find the amount to
be..." The will is hand written and I am not absolutely sure that it says
Jr. But, later it says again, "...allowed William Cormack for attending on
his father and family in time of their affliction with the small pox
$51.25. Allowed William Cormack (jr) for his services as administrator, and
his attention to stock and other property $10.00." If I am interpreting the
Jr correctly then there are two Williams here. William , the son of John
and William Jr. his son. In that case, Greene may well be the son of William
Jr. And living with the grandparents in 1840, rather than being their son.
He still shows up as living with them in 1850 being 13 yrs. old. However,
there is no record of William Jr. in any of the others censuses. Does what I
interpret sound logical? If you want a copy of the probate record, I will
send it to you. I have an extra on hand.
The probate record also mentions an Eli and a Solomon Cormack , I believe
owed money as they are listed under the heading "Contra Credits". There is a
list of Judgments and accounts or "act", and fees relating to the sale of
items in the estate etc.. There are over 30 names listed. Many of them hard
to read. The items listed for sale ranged from hoes, drawknives, saddles
etc. to slaves. In all one man, one woman and child, and one girl. From
this I conclude that John was well to do. I have not yet examined any land
records for Henry Co., but plans are being made for a trip to Paris TN in the
Fall.
From the little history I have found to date on Henry Co., the County
was
established in 1821. The names Rainey and Bledsoe were prominate very early
in the area. I have more to do in researching the County and have a acquired
a list of books. Now I have to try to get them thru inter-library loan.
The Bible records given to Mrs. Claxton, a decendant of my ggrandmother's
family are a mystery. We have determined that John and William of Henry Co.
are not part of that record. It being a record of the Carmacks of Hawkins.
Co. So why was it given to her? Possibly a mistake? An aside, many of the
Hawkins Co. Carmacks moved to Weakely Co., I think, without checking the
records in the1850's or 60's. Greene Carmack was living in Weakely Co. in
1880.
So far I have only succeeded in determining whom John of Henry Co. was not
related to. The dates of birth and death were closest to those of John Jr.,
1851-1833, son of John, 1720-1812, and grandson of Cornelius and Guin, but
he had no son named William. Agnes Jones thought there might be a connection
with John of Bledsoe Co., but there is no direct connection because he was
born in 1773. Other leads connecting him to Cornelius and Guin are becoming
remote. We will keep looking. Jim

I have your message of July 19, 1999 before me. Of course I've
corresponded with you both before. I travel a lot and sort of put
geneaology away for awhile so I had a memory lapse.
We have got to make a connection with both your William and ours.
Something to ponder:
1860 Henry CO census: does it show how much acreage and did Wm own it?
If he did, can you trace it back? Did he homestead it? Land records
tell a lot. Our Berry Carmack's 2d marriage was to an Elizabeth Rainey
who followed him and his wife from MO to AR. She is 18 years old
on 1880 MO census! Her father was James C Rainey and mother was
Melinda on 1880 MO census. Do you have a copy of this 1860 Henry CO
census?
1850 Henry CO census: With all the William's and John's floating around
how
come they named their son Greene Lee Permenta? This would be the last
census going backwards that showed names.
1840 Henry CO census: you mention lM (-5) what does this mean? This
would make sarah 49 still birthing babies?
1830 Henry CO census: John who is 60+ shows up. Now do you have
1833 Probate record copy? What else does this probate prove?
1820 Lenoir CO census: Did you realize the male and female may be the
right age but they already have 8 children? 1830 Talbot CO Georgia
census
on which Carmack M/F appear have 12 children and I believe him to be our
William as he is neighbors with the Edwards of whose family 2 daughters
both marry Carmack boys whom I assume to be Wm's sons as both
Edwards and William Carmack and the 2 sons show up in AL.. And get
this--one of William's sons has20 children? The 19th one sent a letter
found in TN library in 1939 (copy of which I would be glad to send you
regular
mail) verifying that William is the grandfather. But what puzzles me is
he says
his father (Wm's son) was born North Georgia near Bristol, TN?
This is what I have on a 1790 NC map:
"When TN as the SW Territory was separated from NC in early 1790, a
small
part of TN's Washington CO remained in NC and was statutorily outside any
NC CO during 1790 Census. Whether this sparsely
populated area was enumerated was not determined."
Now look at present-day Bristol, TN. You will note that Bristol is right
on
TN/VA boundary and I always surmised that group migrated there from
the MD bunch who were descended from Cornelius having 2 sons: John
and William.*
Have you looked up history of Henry CO TN? I found that even tho the
area
our Carmacks lived is now known as Lee CO the actual CO in the time frame
I was searching was called RUSSELL CO which opened many doors.
There is notation in Dr Peckham's book: John Carmack was bondsman at Wm
and
Pency Kent's wedding 1809 in Craven CO NCplus he sold land to Wm in 1815.
*This is the gal who is an expert on that area--she may could shed some
light.
I have read bible notes that was given to Mrs Claxton--they seem to fit
in with
the Hawkins CO TN bunch of whom there is info, especially in Dr Peckham's
book. Anyway good luck and please send comments.
Did you know Sgt York of WWI fame was from TN and I watched his life
on Biography one night and it was so interesting. He's a Carmack on
mother's side.
