Dale,
Yes, these are 2 separate men. Alfred, son of William Carmack and
Elizabeth Walker, born 14 Jun 1814. The other is James Alfred Carmack,
son of Isaac Carmack and Mary Campbell, born 8 Jan 1814. The father of
Isaac was the William of Lee Co. VA. who died in 1851. This William in
1826 took his family to Indiana, with the exception of Levi. (James
Alfred would have been 12 years old) Then he returned to Lee Co.
(Source: Carmack Family History, compiled by Mrs. Jake Morris).
The descendants of the Indiana families have claimed that their James
Alfred had married Minerva Crockett first and had the 3 sons and a
daughter, and that his 2nd marriage was to Eliza Ann Rhodes about 1840,
3rd marriage was to Delila Jane Moore about 1845, his 4th marriage to
Sarah Bond Lowery, about 1852 and his 5th marriage to Jane Haymaker
about 1865. B
The other Alfred (not James Alfred) has been claimed to have married
Minerva Crockett, and had the same 4 children. Because this Alfred, son
of William and Elizabeth Walker is brother of my G.G.Grandfather Isaac,
I wanted to solve this problem. I used Census records to find them both
and did so:
1850 C. Sullivan Co. TN shows: Carmack, Alfred 36,bp VA, Minerva 30, bp
TN, Robt. 5, Augustus 7/12. (Note: this family is found in Washington
Co in 1860 with additional child Lavinia age 10 and in 1870 they are
back in Sullivan Co. TN and have the son Wade, 9 yrs old.) This is
surely the son of William and Elizabeth Walker.
1850 C. Vermillion Co. INDIANA, shows Alfred Carmack 36 bp TN, Delila
Jane 30 (?), bp Ohio, Mary Jane, 9, bp Indiana, Eliza Jane, 1, bp
Indiana. This is surely the son of Isaac and Mary Campbell and he could
not be the father of Robert, Augusta, Lavinia and Wade or married to
Minerva Crockett. (Note: I have a Family Group Sheet showing Alfred
married Elizabeth Ann Rhodes on 16 Sep 1840, with 1 child, Mary Jane
(she marr. Zera Castle 1859 in Vermillion Co, Ind) This census shows he
has married Delila Moore by 1850 and has a daughter by her probably. I
have a bit more on their family that I won't list here.
Enough already, I just wanted to show both men in different places at
the same time and who was married to Minerva Crockett. (Dale you made
me do it, didn't you? After all.)
