Hi Norm,
I can't speak for Generations Family Tree but I have used Personal Ancestral
File (PAF), Family Origins, Family Tree Maker and even tried Ultimate Family
Tree (UFT). They were all good programs but UFT was probably the hardest to
use. However, I have stuck with Family Tree Maker since it seems to be
intuitive to use, has a good selection of ways to print out your data and
there is a great on line technical assist mailing list. There are several
Broderbund employees who are active on the list as well as some very good
"users" who answer a lot of the questions too. Broderbund was bought out by
The Learning Company and recently by Matell.
My choice would be to take back Generations and replace it with the
inexpensive version of Family Tree Maker, not the 10 CD set, unless you are
interested in that, I think they go for about $29 at Wal Mart. I have found
most of the CDs are unnecessary as you can do a search and see what CDs
might have data you are interested in then you can go to another site and
email volunteers to look up and email the data from the CD. Of course there
is something to be said for "at your fingertips" by owning them. However, a
key thing to remember from these CDs is that the World Family Tree CDs are
trees that individuals send to be published and as such should only be used
as a reference and never a source.
If you have any questions about FTM then let me know. Also you can download
a demo for free to evaluate at

Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas to all Carmack relatives hither and yon...and may you all
have a happy and prosperous New Year!!!\
In the past from time to time, I have just had a 'freebie' Geneological
program on my computer..as a result, I have put the info in 3 times i
think. On Christmas, my daughter gave me a commercial program called
"Generations Family Tree". There are SO many of these programs out, I just
don't know which is the better one.
I'm hoping some of you may have experience with the one i received and/or
others that you think are really good programs. If so, please let me know
and why you think they're the better ones. I don't want to go through
re-entering all this data more than ONE more time.
Let me know quick so i can exchange this 'Generations Family Tree' if it's
not a good one!!!
Thank you all...
