I just received 2nd hand information about a new Carmack book titled "The
Carmacks of the Civil War" by Cecil Ray Carmack. I think he a descendant
of Jesse "Ann" Carmack. The letter was sent with U.S. Information Bureau,
NUMA letterhead (the publisher). Has anyone else received a letter from
them concerning this book? I'm curious about how widespread the
distribution was as I have not received this letter for this book.
Here is a summary of the book:
1. Contains the complete roster of Carmacks in both Union and Confederate
armies, including their units and rank at discharge.
2. It further states the "you'll learn what life was like for Carmacks..."
[this sounds like generic Civil War life and possibly not specific to any
Carmack].
3. It states the book will provide a step-by-step guide for researching
possible Carmack ancestors.
4. Will receive an up-to-date listing of virtually every household that
shares the Carmack name in the US
5. Plus - those that were awarded Medals of Honor
discover the US Social Security Index covering Carmack's.
be provided the only US directory of Carmack's in the US
complete with up-to-date addresses.
It would appear from the description that the only real Carmack information
is the Civil War Carmack rosters. Everything else seems generic or easily
obtained elsewhere (Social Security index for example)
Does anyone remember the Halbert books from a few years ago? I heard they
changed their name, is NUMA their new name? If it's a Halbert's book I
think the concensus from every email I ever read concerning them and their
products was that it was not worth the money. I'm just looking for opinions
from anyone if they know anything about this book, etc. I'm not suggesting
this is of the Halbert style. If it wasn't for the use of Cecil Ray
Carmack's name I would have written it off. So I am unsure.
