There has been some interest lately in establishing an online chat among the
Carmack researchers. I set a chat room up and Leesel and I checked it out.
In order for anyone else to do this you must have an IRC program (Internet
Relay Chat). There are many programs out there for download. One of the
most popular is called mIRC. Microsoft also has one called Microsoft Chat,
it's free but not as capable as the rest. The one I mostly use is called
mIRC and it can be downloaded from
http://www.mirc.co.uk/.
Once the IRC program is installed you have to connect to the server where
the chat room is being held. I setup a Carmack chat room on the following
IRC server,
irc.rootsweb.com. So you need to "add" this server to the list
that comes with mIRC, then connect to it.
Once you are logged in then you will see a list of rooms. I created one
called carmack. You can either click on the room from the list or enter
"/join carmack" (without the quotes) on the command line. If the
irc.rootsweb.com server becomes a problem then a new one can be located and
setup.
Once you enter the room, if there is anyone else there (you will see them
listed in the right hand column), you will join them. If you are the only
one, you will be in there alone until someone comes and joins you. It may
be difficult for everyone, or a majority, or even more than a few, to get
the time and to join the chat at same time, however....it can be fun.
I'll be out of town most of this week but I will set aside some time on
Sunday (18 Oct) at 6pm (eastern) to be in the chat room for anyone that
would like to join me...........
If anyone has any questions about getting this set up, please ask me. Also
I would suggest posting the question to the list as well, I'm sure there are
other Carmack researchers out there that are familiar with IRC and could
help.
Hope to see some of you there.
