Finding Fathers....These clues have helped me in my research, there are
many more, and I am always open for suggestions of clues that have helped
others.
You need to check for:
Earliest Proven Residence
Ancestral Land Records
State Land-Federal Records
Important notes.....
Men were USUALLY in a area at least eight years before buying land or
receiving land thru Warrant Deeds.
When the English first came to America, they never settled over 50 miles
from the SEA. It was many years later, at least a generation or two that
they settled in the central sections of the State.
When you find an ancestor has migrated to another state...for
example....living in N.C. or VA, but born in Maryland, check those wills
and deeds in the state that he formerly lived. His Father may have recently
died, the reason for the migration.
Sample Types of Land Grant Records
Petitions
Warrants
Survey
Surveyor's Notes
Military Land Records are Federal Records
ALWAYS....Identify the chain carriers on deeds, these are
important...they are usually sons, brothers, neighbors, or even the
neighbors children
The War of 1812 ended in 1815
Most land given for Service in Illinois, Indiana, and Arkansas
Tract Book...which is Land Office Records
Note the co-signers of deeds, usually a close relative
Look at all neighbors living around your ancestor in Census Records. If at
all possible, look at the original Census Book in the Archives, microfilm
has left many of the residents out. Most true in Wake and Orange Co. N.C.
Look at original Wills and Deeds when possible, many of them have been
abstracted incorrectly.
Check Tax Rolls
Look at...
Court Records
Divorce Records
When you see reference to a "best friend" in a will, this means father,
brother, uncle, son-in-law, or close relative.
Bastardy Bonds..men that sign these are "Kin", or the father of the
child.
Apprentice Bonds...children are USUALLY bound out to the father's side of
the family, always true if this child was born out of wedlock
Note... Merchants Day Books
These prove that a man lived in this area, or very close by.
Other Types of Deeds
State Land
Warranty Deeds.... unconditional relationship
Quitclaim Deeds...not sole owner
Dower Releases...1/3 interest of land for women
Deeds by Lease and Release
Deeds of Gift
Sheriff or Tax Deeds
Always look at Deed Books for other Deeds that were registered the same
day. This will take at least twelve pages before and after your ancestors'
Deed.
Always note those surnames on same day Deeds, these may be relatives.
More Land Records....
Conditional Deeds Records
Deeds of Trust
Mortgages
Mortgage Releases
Maps....
Topographical Maps
Landowner Maps
Survey Maps...call 1-800-USAMAPS
Follow these men to their death, and where buried.
Follow their son's and son-in-laws.
And ALWAYS....Back up your paperwork and computer data!
