Can anyone tell me anything about Rachel Carmack who married David Essick?
ARe there any relatives out there working on this line?
I am! You are the first person I've come across who is working on my
line. Rachel Carmack Essick was my great-great-great aunt! She was
born 12/6/1826 in St. Clairsville, Bedford Co, PA to Daniel & Catherine
Appleman Carmack. She died 12/27/1905 in Berrien Springs, Berrien Co,
MI. She married David Essick, born 3/1/1824 in PA.
Rachel & David had three children: Martha J. "Mattie" b. December, 1846;
Mary E. born 1848 in MI; and Dick b. 1850 in MI.
Mattie married Burns Helmick who was born 1845 in MI. They had 6
children: Harry E. b. 1869 in MI, married Mina Williams who was b.
8/28/1870 in Big Rock, Kane Co, IL; Frederick b. 1870 in MI; Lena L. b.
June, 1872 in MI; Rachel b. 1874 in MI; David b. 1877 in MI; and Mary
Jane b. May, 1887 in MI.
Rachel's brother John Austin Carmack was my great-great-grandfather. He
died in the Civil War as did their brother Daniel. Another brother,
Thomas, lied about his age and joined the Union Army, was captured and
sent to Andersonville, was liberated, hopped on board the steamship
"Sultana" to go home, it blew up in the middle of the Mississippi River,
he survived, went home to Ohio, and turned 18.
I would enjoy swapping information with you. I can take Daniel back to
Cornelius & Guien and provide other information.
