To anyone who is a descendant of Thomas Green Carmack (1863-1946) and
Mattie Olivia Hale (1874-1961) or Henry Edgar Carmack (1884-1952) and
Effie Marquess Carmack (1885-1974):
I would like to announce a forthcoming book: Out of the Black Patch:
The Autobiography of Effie Marquess Carmack, Folk Musician, Artist, and
Writer, edited by myself and Karen Lynn Davidson. Her autobiography,
previously published as Down Memory Lane, was written for her children
and grandchildren and published privately in 1973. This new edition will
include an introductory essay, notes, appendices, photographs, and an
index. Its expected release will be in November for a price of $29.95.
Effie Marquess was born and raised in western Kentucky in the tobacco
region known as the Black Patch. Much of her autobiography is a memoir
of her childhood in this region and the economic hardships she
experienced as a child and later as a mother and wife. If you have any
interest in the Carmacks and Marquesses of Christian County, Kentucky,
this will a nice volume for you and your family.
