Hello Karen
We were at the site last summer. It is on private land and there is no longer a
cemetery there as we would know it. The area is all overgrown with no standing stones. In
the 1950's there were three headstones standing, and about 10 to 12 graves total. The
three headstones are now each broke in half but readable. Of the other graves, at one time
each were marked with a stone at the head and foot of each grave, some closer together
that would indicate graves of children. We could not find stones or any other indication
of the other graves when we were there. The stones were read a few years ago and are
listed in the "Tombstone Inscriptions of Pulaski County" under the "Carmack
Cemetery". The stones read as follows;
Rebecca Carmack
Born July 19, 1808
Died Jan. 1, 1858
Henry
Husband of
Susan Carmack
Born May 17, 1847
Died Nov. 22, 1872
Lewis Carmack
Born Mar. 16, 1806
Died Dec. 20, 1872
There was also a marker at the foot of Rebecca's grave, a flat stone with
"RC" carved on it. And on the bottom of Henry's stone there is an
inscription, hard to read but I think it reads.....
"He gives and when he takes away"
"He takes but what he gave"
The graves were located not far from the site of Lewis Carmacks homestead, a log
cabin he and his family lived in. It is long gone and an old unused silo is in it's
place now. I have photo's of the stones and area, and would gladly share if you are
interested.
