Judy, not sure if you meant this to go to the list or just me. Since it
sounded like it I am responding to you via the List.
While I agree the picture stated to be Ann Black looks of Indian descent it
is not proven that it is Ann. I have heard the picture came from Ms Exie
Belk but I have also heard that Exie "thought" it was Ann. I can't be
positive since I never talked to her directly.
I have not looked very deeply into her Ann's parents but another researcher
listed her mother's side as follows:
1 Johan Paul Vogt b: Abt. 1680 in Germany d: Abt. 1761 in Harrisonburg,

Assuming this lineage is correct, I do not see how Ann can be of Indian
descent. Maybe some of the others on the list have some additional
resources squirreled away that could also help or add to this.

For anyone who's interested, "Overton Co., TN Pictorial History" published
by Turner Publishing Co., Pudacah, KY, c. 1996, has a picture of Ann Black
Carmack. If I remember right, it says she was the granddaughter of a
Cherokee Indian Chief. She certainly looks Indian in the picture. The
Indian heritage may have been on her mother's side, instead of her father's.
The book is available at the St. Louis Public Library. It has a picture of
at least one other Carmack family. I'll get it again sometime and copy the
pictures for anyone who wants them.
