I am looking for information regarding my husband's 3rd great-greataunt, Eliza
Pearson, and her husband, James Carmack. Her name was Eliza Pearson and she married James
Carmack about 1845 in Hawkins County, TN. They lived in Civil District 6 of Hawkins
County and I believe both to have died in the same area. Eliza had been keeping house for
her brother, William Riley Pearson, and married James Carmack about the same time as
William married his first wife, Jane McMinn.
According to the census records, James and Eliza continued to live near her brother until
William left for Sullivan County between 1880 and 1900. James also appears to have died
between these years since Eliza is listed in the 1900 census as a widow living with her
two sons. Here are the listing from the different censuses of the 6th Civil District,
Hawkins County, TN:
1850, household 89/89, living next door to William Pearson (Eliza's brother)
James Carmack, 35, farmer
Eliza Carmack, 27
Madison Sanders, 30, no occupation
1860, household 1023/963
James Carmack, 45, farmer
Eliza A. Carmack, 32
William Carmack, 9
Rosanna Carmack, 7
Archibald Carmack, 4
Nancy Carmack, 3
John R. Carmack, 1
1870, household 139/139
James Carmack, 57, farmer
Eliza Carmack, 45, keeping house
William Carmack, 19
Archibald Carmack, 15
John Carmack, 11
Amanda Carmack, 9
Harvey Carmack 6
1880
James Carmack, 64, farmer
Eliza Carmack, 50, keeping house
Arche Carmack, 24, laborer
John Carmack, 21, laborer
Amanda Carmack, 18, at home
Harvy Carmack, 15, laborer
1900
Eliza A. Carmack, 2/1830, 70
Archabol Carmack, 8/1856, 43
John R. Carmack, 5/1860, 40
The two sons, John R. and Archibald Carmack, are living alone in 1910 so Eliza probably
died between 1900 and 1910. An interesting note is the fact Eliza's age is never the
correct years apart until between 1880 and 1900 (age 50 to age 70). In 1900 Eliza is
shown as had 5 children with 3 still living. This does not match the number of children
listed from 1850 to 1870. It could be that James married Eliza Pearson, had William &
Rosanna, then Eliza Pearson died and James remarried another Eliza. This would make
Archibald, Nancy, John R., Amanda, and Harvey as five children from the second marriage
and equal what is shown in 1900.
