I have not totally understood the following yet but I think it is a list of
people who were pardoned by Queen Elizabeth. Of interest are the Cormack
and Carmack names. If anyone has any insight into this please pass it along
to the list.
thanks,
dale

John referred a while ago to the possibility that the Fiants of Queen
Elizabeeth might make some mention of McM's. I contacted the Royal Irish
Academy in Dublin and they had the aprropriate Fiants. The Librarian
graciously agree to go through the 40-50 pages for me, looking for McM
references. Here is what she found and sent to me:

Subject: Re: Fiants
That's pretty difficult. Strange that MacLysaght would describe this as a
list of the followers of O'Donnell. It's really a fairly common pardon list
from the period. As usual, the O'Donnell names come first, then a few
O'Gallagher names - but after that the names are pretty much jumbled
together. But I suppose these men could be described as followers of
O'Donnell. It really doesn't tell us much though, except that one of the
leading M'Manimans of the time was probably Neyce bane M'Manaman. Some
similar M'Maniman names appear in the other pardon lists from the Patent
Rolls of James I which Ted has on his web page.
These are the names I am picking out from the list; anyone see any other
surnames?
O'Donnell
O Galcour
O Dowgan
O Feye
O Skanlan
O Furie
O Quinn
O Farran
M'Closkey
O Rogan
M'Carmack
O Carralan
O Pettane
O Mulloye
O Sheyle
O Lappan
Neyce bane M'Manaman
McGuire
McMartin
O Gormogan
In one of his books, under the name Shovelin, MacLysaght said that two of
the name were mentioned as followers of O'Donnell in the 1601 Fiant - but I
don't see a single Shovelin/Shevlin name in this pardon list. It was either
in More Irish Families or a Supplement to Irish Families. Do you have any
way of checking the reference Bob? This doesn't seem to be the same
document
MacLysaght was describing.
