We have started a Carmack DNA Surname Project. We need Carmack male's since the Y
chromosome is only passed from father to son unchanged. Testing the Y chromosome will
provide a genetic finger print consisting of 12 or 25 numbers. By comparing this finger
print to others with the Carmack surname, we can determine if they are related. In
addition, it will answer the question about Native American DNA.
We need any spelling variation such as Cormack, Carmick, etc.
The next step would be to decide whether to test 12 markers or 25 markers. There are pros
and cons of the two tests. I recommend 25 markers from the outset if it is affordable.
The 12 marker test is usually sufficient to determine whether or not there is a relation
to another project participate. Also, the 12 marker Project Price of $99 may be more
affordable. Two individuals are considered related for the 12 marker test if they match at
10, 11 or 12 of the markers; an upgrade to the 25 marker test is then recommended to
verify the match. The upgrade cost an additional $90 and is done from the original test
kit contents.
The 25 marker test provides more accuracy in determining whether you are related to
another project participant. Other projects have seen participants who showed 10 of 12
markers common at the 12-marker level, but showed 23 of 25 markers common with the 25
marker test. These participants might have concluded that they were not related if they
had not done the 25 marker test from the outset. Another advantage of the 25 marker test
is that it provides a more accurate estimate of the Most Recent Common Ancestor, or MRCA,
for two project participants. The 25 marker test costs $169.
