Dale, here is the letter you mentioned. Since it is rather short, i
thought it would be ok to just send it on an email for everyone to
see. It was originally written in 1939, transcribed, and sent to me by a
grandson of Alonzo Louis Carmack.
Take care,

Chicago, IL.
Dear Mrs. Webber,
Yes, I am the grandson of Wm. Carmack the first and a son of Ferney Kent
Carmack by his second wife. He had eleven children by his first wife,
Permilia Welsh, and nine by second wife, Elizabeth Vinson. I am the
nineteenth one. I have a sister Minnie Perry, younger then I am. She
lives in Rico, Texas. I had a whole brother named Ferney and a half
brother named William. Also my son is named Furnie. He lives at 2303 East
Plum St., Newcastle, Indiana.
My father was born in North Georgia near Bristol, Tenn. In 1807, He was
killed by a negro by the name of Mose Crittenton. My half brother, William
killed Mose Crittenton. My father was 67 years of age at that time; I was
3; my sister was 1; I am 67 now.
Aunt Elizabeth Dozier was making her home at my father's house in Lee Co.,
Ala. when she married Mr. Dozier. He was an overseer on a plantation at
that time. They left to go to some place in Mo. 1850's. Aunt Elizabeth
came back to our house after the death of my father. I remember hearing
her tell my mother about traveling on the Mississippi steam boats. I was
traveling all the summer of 1914 in the West and Middle West and made
repeated inquiry in St. Louis about the Doziers and found a man by that
name but he said his family came from New York.
Uncle James Monroe Carmack's wife, Aunt Angeline, was my mother's
aunt. She was visiting Aunt Angeline near LaGrange, Georgia, when she met
my father. He was in route from Lee Co. Ala. to North Georgia. On his
return they married. After that Uncle James move to Elmo Co., Ala. and
raised a large family. Uncle John raised a family in Walker Co.,
Ala. Uncle William raised a family in Russell Co. Ala. There were a
great many others in his family, but they drifted out in other directions
of the country. I have met Carmack's from coast to coast and all of them
trace back to Wm. Carmack the first of North Georgia, near Bristol, Tenn.
All that I have heard of my grandmother is, her name was Pencie, as I have
whole sister named Pencie. I know nothing about Mr. Dozier. I was told
that my father had brothers: Thomas, Edmond, Frederick, Sister Pencie and
Anna.
I never talked with ex-senator Edmond Carmack, deceased. His son Edmond,
lived in Nashville, Tenn. and was a lawyer. I am sorry I am not able to
answer your pointed questions.
Yours very
truly,
Dated: Dec 1939 A.L.
