Hi Karen dear,

also have a 2nd marriage (or 1st?) of John Paul Carmack to a person
named 'Landers' no Ida Wolf at all. Four children of John Paul

I think hustler meant something different in 1881...
"Tilghman L. Grossnickle, son of Daniel and Ellen (Blessing)
Grossnickle, grew to manhood on his father's farm in Woodsboro
District, and received his learning at Grove Academy, close to the
old home, under Doctor Stitely, E.O. Norris. Alice Bowers, Mr. Dupey
and Adam Roser. When he was about nineteen years old, he gave up
attending school. He worked for his father until the latter's death,
and he then carried on the farm for one year. In 1886, Mr.
Grossnickle was married, and the succeeding three years lived with
his father- in- law. He then went to farming on the L.F. Miller
farm, now occupied by J.C. Mentzer. From there he went to the A.D.
Birely farm in Woodsboro District, staving for two years. His next
residence was on the Michael Lippy farm at Rocky Ridge, where he was
located for one year. Mr. Grossnickle then, in the spring of 1897,
came to his present farm, which is one of the best in that locality.
Mr. Grossnickle is progressive and a hustler. He is a believer in !
up- to- date methods and by the use of such has been enabled to
secure large crops.
Although he is an ardent Republican, Mr. Grossnickle does not take
an active part in politics. He is not a member of any church.
Mr. Grossnickle was married October 7, 1886, to Alice Carmack, of
Woodsboro District. She is a daughter of Joshua and Amanda (Eyler)
Carmack, and was born in Woodsboro District, February 23, 1859. She
acquired her education at Grove Academy, and is a member of Haugh's
Lutheran Church. She is the mother of six children: Kansie Grace,
was born August 17, 1887, and died September 17, 1894; Mary Key,
born October 11, 1889; Joshua Carmack, born March 24, 1892; Rhoda,
born February 15, 1894, and died September 13, 1894; Phoebe Ellen,
born November 19, 1897; and Wilbur Luther, born May 15, 1899.
Joshua Carmack, the father of Mrs. Grossnickle, was born on the old
Carmack farm, near Haugh's Church, Frederick County, April 3, 1827.
He received a common school education, and followed day laboring. He
was married to Amanda Eyler, daughter of John and Catharine (Miller)
Eyler. Mr. Carmack died August 2, 1892, and is buried with his wife
at Haugh's Church Cemetery. She died August 4, 1894. They had issue:
Mary Catharine, who was born October 31, 1856, married Henry
Keilholtz, and died of typhoid fever in 1893; and Alice (Mrs. Grossnickle).
John Carmack, the grandfather of Mrs. Grossnickle, was engaged in
farming in Woodsboro District, near Detour. He was married to Ida M.
Wolf, and had these children: Hanson, William, John, Ephraim,
Joshua, Sophia, Sarah and Margaret."

Which John was this? I apparently have him mixed up with the John
Carmack who married Mary Delaplaine in my database.
