When I search the federal census on Ancestry for Levi Carmack in 1850,
there
is only one listing for who you call Levi Jr. I can't find your other
listing in VA or Claiborne TN. 1850 listed all family members but I
could
not find Evan, Martin, Enoch, there was a Jacob in Washington VA (wrong
father), there was a younger Jacob in Claiborne, son of Isaac, nor 90
year
old William. You may be right but I couldn't find the link between the
2,
at least on Ancestry.
Maybe someone on the Carmack list has researched the Levi familiy and
can
help with this.

Is there any documentation to show that the Lee Co VA Levi would move
from
Claiborne TN back to Lee VA, the census shows him born in VA. Maybe
the
Lee Co VA Levi is not related to the Claiborne TN Levi. What do you
think?

Response from Gail Carmack:
If I understand what has been said, there seems to have been some doubt
expressed that Levi Carmack Jr. is a son of Levi Carmack Sr. and would
include him in the North Carolina Carmacks per DNA testing. Levi
Carmack Jr. was in Lee Co, VA in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses. To
my knowledge, there were no other Carmack families then (or now) in Lee
or Claiborne except the descendants of William Carmack b. 1761 through
his son Levi Sr. I have found no other family in the area to connect
with Levi Jr.
Most of us show a total of 13 children for Levi Carmack Sr & Elizabeth
Peters which includes Levi Jr. According to my count of the 1840 census
(below with my comments) there were 9 sons, 1 grandson, and 2 daughters
listed. Three of the children were married. Isaac Carmack & family,
and Kesiah (Carmack) Cowan and her 4 children were nearby. Indications
are that Kate (Carmack) Godsey was in Scott County, VA. That leaves
one extra male (son? grandson?)
------------------
1840 CLAIBORNE CO, TN CENSUS (as of June 1)--LEVI CARMACK FAMILY
2 males under 5 (Wiley b. Jan. 1840 s/o Mary Ann, Enoch age 3)
2 males age 5-10 (Martin age 5, Evan age 7)
2 males age 10-15 (Jacob age 12, Abraham age 13)
3 males age 15-20 (Levi Jr. age 16, William age 18, and ____?)
1 male age 20-30 (John age 20-22)
l male age 50-60 (Levi Carmack age 49)
1 female age 10-15 (Elizabeth age 10)
1 female age 20-30 (Mary Ann age 20)
1 female age 40-50 (Elizabeth Peters age 49)
I have calculated their ages as of the June 1 census date. John's age is
in question. Some researchers say he was b. 1818 and some as late as
1827. He was age 30 in the 1850 Owsley Co, KY Census so an 1818-1820
birth date appears to be right.
Apparently, Levi Sr. moved from Claiborne Co, TN to Lee Co, VA in the
1840's per this deed. (You are right, Pat. He may have only moved
across the road.) He was in Lee Co, VA in 1850. He appears to have been
there before in 1836 when son Enoch was born. Levi Jr. was married in
Claiborne Co, TN in 1847 and he was in Lee Co. in 1850.

William Carmack was in Lee Co, VA in 1840, age 77, Rev.War pensioner,
blind. I have not been able to identify Jacob, age 8 months (Elizabeth
A.'s son??) and have not found a mention of him again. Also, Sarah Gray
has not been identified. The VA birthplace of Levi and William is in
question. Two of the sons of Levi Sr. (Martin & William) in the 1900
census gave their father's birthplace as MD.
