Has anyone heard of Corbett Carmack before? There is an item on eBay for sale that once
belonged to him.
For consideration by serious collectors , we are selling this rare personal family
heirloom. The year was 1927 when George Herman "Babe" Ruth hit his record 60
homeruns. That year he hit four of them in Detroit Michigan and this location is where our
ball originates from. Corbett Carmack was a police officer on the 1927 Detroit Police
Force. He was working a game at Navin Field when Ruth hit the ball out, he chased after
the ball and saw a small boy pick it up, he offered the kid 50 cents for it and the rest
is history. Carmack originally hailed from Southwest Virginia and had traveled to Detroit
in search of work. He had a friend in Hilton Virginia ( his home town) named John L.
Darnell. Darnell was my great grandfather and a rabid N.Y. Yankee fan from that era. On a
visit home Carmack brought the ball back and gave it to my grandfather as a gift. The ball
was kept by John L. until his passing when it was inherited by his only child Roe Darnell
Wilhelm ( my grandmother). Before Corbet Carmack passed away she took a notary to the
nursing home where he lay dying after having both legs amputated. He swore on his death
bed the provenance of the ball and that certificate (though worn) is clearly legible and
is included in this sale. In 1975 my grandmother passed the ball on to me as I am her only
grandson.
