Myself, I have never heard anything about Carmack's being German. I have
always heard that they were Scotch-Irish. As for shortening the name, I

that John Christopher Carmack used many
versions of the last name, one being MacCarmack. John christopher is my 8G
Grandfather and I have him born in Scotland.
