Hey Dale,
Thanks for your reply. I don't feel I can subscribe until I get a computer
at home. I just do a little here at work as I can. But I have printed off
what you sent so that I will have it. I am going to e-mail my son and
perhaps he will subscribe for me. Would that be okay? I really appreciate
what you sent to me.
I do know that Henry Thomas Carmack and his wife Bethley Jane Turley lived
in Greene County Arkansas for a period before they went to Texas, probably
(and this is a guess) in the 1880s. I have found other Carmacks in Greene
County during that time, but no record of Tom and Bethley Jane YET. I did
find a Loxe Carmack. I wonder if that is the same as Locke.
About twenty-five years ago my husband and I went to Greene County Arkansas
to find the grave of Bethley Jane's mother. We did. We also met a man
(whose name I have now forgotten) who had know her and her family. He was
in his late 70s then. Anyway, he told us that Tom Carmack had a brother or
father (I can't remember which) who only had one arm and was a canoe maker.
He also said that he was "mean" and once beat a mule to death. I wasn't
sure
if he meant Tom, or his brother or his father. As I said, he was an elderly
man at the time we met him and was a young child when he knew this family.
So his memory may not have been correct. But it is an interesting story.
What I do know is that in the early 1900 Tom, Bethley Jane and her mother
Martha went to Winfield, Titus County Texas where they lived for the
remainder of their lives. My husband lived with both Martha and Bethley
Jane. (Martha died just before her 100th birthday when my husband was seven
years old. Bethley Jane lived to be 104, and was agile and active until her
death. She and Tom ran a hotel there and after Tom's death, she continued
to run it. Apparently she was a pretty good business woman.
Sorry to have run on so, but thought you might find the above of some
interest.
Thanks again for the info.
Brenda

Subject: Carmack roots
Hi everyone! I am attempting to find out the lineage of my Carmack
ancestor. The only information I have is the following:
Henry Thomas Carmack was born in June of 1854 in Tallapoosa County Alabama
and died in 1923 in Titus County Texas. He was married to Bethley Jane
Turley on December 3, 1873 in Chambers County Alabama. I think that Tom's
father's name was John. (On his tombstone he is listed as H. Thomas
Carmack). Tom and Bethley Jane had several children that I know of. There
was Carrie who married James Smith and with whom Tom and Bethley Jane lived
in Titus County Texas. There were also sons named Lon, A.L. and others whose
names escape me at the moment.
If you have any information on H. Thomas Carmack's father's lineage, I would
really appreciate your help.
thanks in advance.
