This really should not be standard operating procedure. It calls into doubt the
authenticity of the engraving on the stone, because what you are "cuting" into
the stone is what you think you see, which might not be what was originally engraved. And
shaving cream has chemicals which may serve to further erode the stone. It is best to
leave these stones as they are and cherish them for the history they provide. Please
don't try to "improve" their readability. If you really want to try to read
stones in this state of disrepair, try taking a hand-held mirror with you and shining
light on the engravings from different angles. The activities you are promoting may be
looked upon in some states as vandalism, and you could even go to jail for doing this.
