Desecration (also called desacralization or desanctification) is the act of depriving
something of its sacred character, or the disrespectful or contemptuous treatment of that
which is held to be sacred or holy by a group or individual.
No person in the history of the USA has ever been convicted of desecration due to shaving
cream or re-cutting letters on a tombstone, principally because it is not desecration.
Shaving creaming or re-cutting letters neither deprives the stone of its sacred character,
nor is it a disrespectful or contemptuous act. Good luck convincing a judge that someone
trying to making it easier to read the letters is expressing contempt/disrespect for the
stone.
