Does anyone know the real story of the Carmack tombstones that are in the
Pops Smith Cemetery? I have been there, have seen the stones for myself which
are very nice modern stones. But my understanding is that most of the
Carmack family is buried at the Carmack Cemetery in Okalona which is just south of
Livingston. This cemetery is located on what was the Carmack homestead. I
have also been there, but there is little to see other than a grave or two
where any inscription is still readable. A DAR stone is there for Cornelius.
The cemetery is fenced now, but I believe that at one time it was probably
open to farm animals as most of the stones are broken. There are also a good
number of graves marked only with a rock.

I also would like to have a copy of the picture. Seems that many of us would. Is there any way that a link can be set up to this picture or just email it to everyone? We could do the same with other Carmack pictures as well.
Thanks,
Terry

Message Board Post:
Isaac Carmack (1816-1862) died in Battle of Mill Springs (Somerset, Ky) Jan.19th, 1862.
The subject of my inquiry is one of his sons, Jacob, who also was in the battle, both being in same 19th Tenn. Confederate infantry, Co. I.
They had lived in the Cumberland Gap area just prior to the war. Claiborne Co, Tn.
Another son, Moses Carmack, was in the Confederacy also, but deserted later and joined the Union cause - and died years later in Missouri. It is rumored that Jacob also later deserted; but I have no details whatsoever. I don't know if it's fact or not.
But I am searching for descendents of Isaac's son - Jacob Carmack (1840-1900) and Elizabeth Chadwell (1837-1923). They are my gg-grandparents.
Jacob and Elizabeth had 16 children, one of whom I remember and was my great grandmother, Susan Jane Carmack (1869-1966) who married William (Bill) Spicer (1864-1922).
She and her husband lived their lives in Kentucky - mostly in Lee/Estill counties.
Primarily lived in the Willow, Ky. area - near lock #13 on the Kentucky River.
Jacob Carmack was a traveling Baptist preacher thru-out Ky. and Tn. He died in 1900 while a Deacon of the Drowning Creek Baptist Church in Madison County, Ky. He preached in big Harlan Co. meeting in 1890. He supposedly "looked Indian" and a Great aunt told my mother she once saw a picture of him and he was thin, dark complexion and dark hair - and his wife was 'grey'.
His wife, Elizabeth Chadwell Carmack died in 1923 and is buried alongside him in the Redhill Cemetery in Madison Co. near present day Panola, Ky. Also one dau is buried
there: Isabell Carmack Spicer (1877-1898).
I recently 'found' their long lost graves with informational clues provided by Tony (Root) Carmack - a persistent and capable researcher of the Carmack lineage.
Now. I desperately want ANY information, especially photos and other documents concerning Jacob, his wife, and any of their children and further descendents. I would love to see a photo of Jacob and Elizabeth, especially.
And who has the traveling preacher's bible? If it exists, it should be full of genealogical information!
Other children I have listed from the marriage of Jacob Carmack and Elizabeth Chadwell are:
Enoch Carmack (married a Stamper).
Martha Carmack.
Elizabeth Clementine (Tyner) Carmack (1865-1955) (married Elias Elvin Addison-1859-1929): two children Charlie (1887-1976) and Henry (1888-1939) Addison.
Lucy Carmack (married Tom Barnes) : had 17 children.
John Carmack.
Henry (Bud) Carmack.
Alfred Carmack.
Dave Carmack.
Jesse Carmack.
Lucian Carmack.
Anna Mae Carmack
Isabell (Ibia?) Carmack(1877-1898) - married Jesse Spicer (b:1870).
Eugene Carmack.
Sylvester Carmack (married Myrtle Wells).
Mary Carmack (married a Stamper in Canada).
Should anyone know of any mistakes in the above listings, please let me know so I can correct things.
Should anyone have any information whatsoever, PLEASE post it on the board and/or email me. I thank you in advance for your help.
