There are several possibilities for ancestors of Cornelius (the one born ca
1681).
Dan Carmake arrived 1654 in VA
Cornelius Micormack 20 yr old in 1661, St Mary's Co, MD
Chris. Carwick (Christopher Carmack), arrived 1678
We cannot prove linkages to any of these men. As Norm points out many
times we try to force a connection when we WANT there to be one.
Congrats Norm, it's always nice to remove another brick from the wall.

I ran across the Fall 2000 Overton Co. Historical Society Newsletter. Page
5 shows the children of Jesse C. Carmack and Ann Black. The list indicates
some middle initials that I had not seen before:
Elizabeth J (my notes always showed this to be E)
Susannah L (my notes also showed her name as Susan)
William H
Joseph M
Can anyone confirm these middle initials (or provide actual names)?
Thanks,
dale
I found a marriage reference for a Jesse Carmack married to Tearcy Kent Oct
5, 1807 in Craven Co. NC. Does anyone know which if Tearcy is the same
person as Patience Kent?

Good news. I found a reference to both the ship passenger list and also the
Maryland State Archives. Land Office, Patent Records, Liber 15, Folio 553.
Annapolis, Maryland: 1678.

It would appear that the ship passenger list might be part of the Maryland
State Archives record, can anyone confirm?
You will notice Chris. Carwick almost at the bottom.
Irish Passenger Lists
St. George - London - Waterford - Maryland - Oct 7, 1677
Following is the passenger list for the St. George, a merchant ship that
sailed from Waterford, Ireland to Maryland (don't know what port) in 1677,
carrying 180 passengers.
"Oct. 7 [1677] Portsmouth. Ralegh Hull to Robert Yard. This morning sailed
from Spithead the St. George of London for Waterford and thence for
Maryland,

On November 1, 1678, John Quigley, a merchant captain, not the captain of
the ship, appeared before the Secretary of Maryland and applied for land
warrants for transporting 180 settlers into the province on the ship
St. George of London. Following is the list of settlers. The original

Captain John Quigley hath appeared before me and made oath upon the
Holy Evangelist of Almighty God that the severall persons within named
amounting to the number of one hundred and eighty were by him imported
into this province in the Ship St. George of London, and that neither
himself nor any person for him by his consent privity or knowledge hath
made use of their or any of their rights for taking up of land according
to the condition of plantations. Given under my hand the first day of
November anno 1678.

Here is another reference:
SOURCE: Roberta Padgett: CHRISTOPHER CARMICK arrived in America in 1678 on
the ship, St. George of London and landed in a Maryland Port. His origin is
not designated and he was "transported", but not as a "servant". Therefore,
someone paid his passage. It might have been DANIEL CARMACK, who was
already in Maryland, the first Carmack found on the records. ONERA
CARMACK, who might have been his wife, came one year later.
The first several sentences probably stem from the same Early Settlers of
Maryland by Radoff reference. Does anyone have a copy of a record showing
Onera?

I came across the following quote from (can't locate the specific source,

SOURCE: Maryland State Archives - Land Office, Patent Records, Liber 15,

"October 7, 1677, Portsmouth. Ralegh Hull to Robert Yard. This morning

I am also not sure if this all relates to the same record. Does anyone have
the Maryland State Archives - Land Office, Patent Records, Liber 15, Folio
553. Annapolis, MD: 1678 or anything showing the above referenced
information?

There are a handful of references equated to Christopher Carmack. I thought
it might be helpful to list the various references and quotes attributed to
Christopher, maybe between all of us on the list we can verify the quotes
that have been floating around. I'll try and list these over a series of
emails.
To that end, here are what I have been able to find, has anyone seen (or
does anyone have an actual copy of) the record?
I came across the following quote from the work of Norm Anders:
"Christopher Carmack arrived in America in 1678 with stated intentions of
residing in Maryland. His place of
origin other than Scotland was not identified. [See the Early Settlers of
Maryland by Radoff; page 801, he was
transported which meant that someone else paid his way. Quite often the one
transported was under contract to
repay the cost of his transportation by serving his benefactor for a
specified period which was usually indicated
in the record by the phrase "transported servant". Page XI. The record did
not indicate that this was the case for
Christopher. Christopher could have been married with a young wife. The
record would have indicated the head
of household only. I do not believe he was married at the time he arrived in
America in 1678, but rather shortly
thereafter coming to Cecil/Kent Co Maryland.
No other records were found that mentioned Christopher in the General
Maryland records in Cecil, Kent,
Frederick, Prince George Co., Maryland, or in Salem New Jersey. Conversely
he may be found elsewhere.
The date of the birth of Christopher is based on the assumption that he was
in the 20/30 age group when he
arrived in America. Identity of his wife and date of marriage are unknown.
The assumption that he is the father
of the later mention children is based on the following:
a. Christopher was the first Carmack on record to come to America. All
efforts so far have produced no
Carmack or McCarmack prior to this arrival.
b. He came to Maryland where Cornelius and Peter appear as mature adults.
c. He was apparently the right age to be their father and no other Carmacks
have been discovered in the locality
and time period that could have been their father."
Does anyone have the cited document, Early Settlers of Maryland by Radoff?
Hi All,
I noticed several have Christopher as father of Cornelius 1681, has
someone found information to prove Christopher is the father of
Cornelius, if so I would like a copy of your documentation. I haven't
found anything on who the father of Cornelus.
Thanks, Agnes Jones

Hi Stephanie,
This is wonderful that you have shared your hard work. I noticed
on my lineage, you have up to my father (Charles Russell) and aunt (Martha

First, if Rodney Gayle Lucas of Texas is out there, please email me, re:
John Wilson and Nancy Jane Carmack!
Hello Carmack folks...
I'm looking for a short summary, on Cornelius of 1681 (I remember seeing
something once), and maybe something on his son, William of 1716, and also
on Cornelius of 1736, the son of William.
I thank you for whatever you can help me with.
Hello Roberta,
Do you suppose you could email me with some full names and dates of your
line so I can update my data? I never had a last name for "Ruth" either.
Also, could someone out there rehash that 'Christopher Carmack' thing and
whether there is any validity to it, wherefrom it surfaced, etc. I like
the idea of having one more step up, but there seems to be so much
contradiction to this.
Ya'll stay warm, whereever you may be !!
Thank you ,

Stephanie: What a lot of work to put that all on your site. I haven't studied
all of it yet, but on Geneation No. 1 Christopher 1Carmack born 1653 in
Scotland, this is the first I have seen a parent listed for the Christopher born

Thomas Green Carmack line.
What a monumental work. Hope to hear from you.

What an impressive body of work. I am sure you are proud of it.
I do not believe we are in the same line BUT I noticed one reference
that caught my eye. I have traced my line back to William and Pency
(Kent) Carmack in Lenoir and Craven Counties in North Carolina. It is
believed that William was the son of John II (married to Mary) who was
the son of John I ( also married to a Mary).
In your line you reference at 76 vii George Washington Carmack b May 7,
1823 Craven County, NC
d September 29, 1882 in Tuscumbia, AL. Do you have any other
information that you could share on the Carmack's in North Carolina
during any time period?
Finally, has any Carmack males in your line considered participating in
the Carmack DNA Group? It is a great way to definitely establish common
lines with other Carmacks.
Again, thanks for sharing with the rest of us Carmacks.

Now, my mother, Gloria F. Spicer (Wiseman), just told me that her grandma's birthday(Susan J. Carmack Spicer) was the day after hers, (which is 1 Aug) so that makes her grandma Carmack being born on 2 Aug!
This is a very good clue - I just wish I could get a couple more clues that would prove out and show this is the correct lineage.
Mom didn't know of any brothers/sisters, or parents names, etc.
Seems the family knows very little about her... most everyone is dead that would have known details.
What you posted destroys the family legend of her being born on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in TN/NC and being the daughter of a Cherokee Indian preacher - but that's fine as I'd like the facts, whatever they may be.
Thank you very much!
