I recently made contact with a cousin who gave me the complete list of
ancestors buried at the Brooks Family Cemetery, located on my grandfather's
farm at Lee Co, VA/Claiborne Co, TN border (Ewing, VA. and Tazewell or
Harrogate, TN).
I was quite surprised to find a group of Carmacks buried there. Maybe you
will recognize some of the names.

I just read an obituary listing for a James Carmack Baird, age 82, Bristol,
TN. (June 16, 2001). Thought it might have some connection to your family
tree.

Hello,
"E. Carmack" is Ephraim Carmack who died at the age of 25 on 20 Jun 1864
at the battle of Kennesaw Mountain, GA. He was the son of Perry & Mary
Ann Miller Carmack of Mercer Co, OH. His mother received a pension for
his service. "DO" is "ditto".
Karen Carmack Stadler
In my search for CW information on Enoch Carmack, born 1836, died ca.
1863, I received today a "Roll of Honor" (XXIII) 1869, Names of Soldiers who
died in Defense of the American "Union" and buried in National
Cemeteries--Marietta, GA; Donelson, TN; Chattanooga, TN; Murfreesboro, TN;
and Knoxville, TN.
On this list was E. Carmack, Rank "do" (I do not know what "do" means),
Company K, 40th Infantry, died June 20, 1864, Sec. G, Grave #337, at
Marietta, GA.
Does anyone recognize this E. Carmack???

Thanks for the link Jim, I thought I'd pass it along. For everyone else,
this site has some good basic information that might be nice to know as you
scan pictures for including in your genealogy efforts or otherwise. This
site talks about the various formats and their strengths and weaknesses. I
know that when I first started scanning old family pictures that I tried to
minimize the file size by using a jpeg format. Now I know that this was a
mistake since these scans lose some of the original resolution. They look
fine on a computer screen but not for printing or archiving. Anyway, there
is some good information on the site.

Hi There Cousin!
I think I met your brother Thomas when we were in Ca in 58, too. Is he a
redhead? You know, I remember hearing about Hazel all my growing up years,
but can't remember ever meeting her, but I do remember Effie. Not an easy
on to forget. So, you're of my children's generation, right? Tell me about
your family. I'm so excited about getting to know so many Carmacks. It's a
kick and 1/2! My nephew Brian Llewellyn, (my brother Tom's son,) who lives
in Idaho is doing a book on my mom, his grandma, of course, Flora Carmack
Llewellyn. I'm so excited for him to finish it. Anyone that wants a copy,
just let me know. He's just married a year and expecting their first baby
in September and busy as can be, but he'll get it done! I'm tickled to meet
you. Keep in touch!
Love, Judy

Thanks Betty and Cardin for a nice plug!
"Out of the Black Patch" is, indeed, Effie Marquess
Carmack's memoir. I may be biased but it's a darn good read.
My great grandmother, Effie, had an interesting life in
western Kentucky. If you can afford the steep price for the
book, it's worth getting a copy.
Please note that despite what the dust jacket copy says,
Effie's year of death was 1974, not 1973.
Regards to all,
Noel Carmack

Can I right off ask you if you have the death date of
Mary Ann Boyd
Ferrell Camack Thomason? I have been told 1903 or 1910, but
have not been
able to get proof from Kentucky.
I can remember my father speaking of the cousins in

My brother John now lives in Salt Lake City--has
returned from Germany
where he was serving our church.
You probably know that Noel Carmack was the editor of
the book "Out of

grandfather was Noel, brother to Cecil. He will no doubt
write you too.

Hi Pat,
Thomas Green Carmack's son Cecil married Effie Marquess. I bought a copy,
it is very interesting. Thanks for letting me know about it Noel.
I found this description on the Amazon.com site:
Out of the Black Patch : The Autobiography of Effie Marques Carmack, Folk
Musician, Artist, and Writer (Life Writings of Frontier Women)
by Effie Marquess Carmack, Karen Lynn Davidson (Editor), Noel A. Carmack
(Editor)
Card catalog description
"Effie Carmack's memoir emphasizes her vibrant childhood on a poor tobacco
farm. She describes a wide variety of folk practices, from healing and
crafts to children's games and amusements. Her family's life included the
backbreaking labor and economic trials of raising tobacco but was enriched
by a web of relatives, a deep familial heritage, communal music, creative
play, and many other traditional activities. The Marquesses' baptism as
Mormons added another important dimension to Effie's life. Her account of
turn-of-the-century Mormon missionaries adds to the record of Latter-day
Saint attempts to establish a presence in the South. But it is the
articulate, observant, vernacular voice of a turn-of-the-century woman from
rural Kentucky that is most evident in her narrative."--BOOK JACKET.
Customer Reviews
Effie Marquess Carmack (1885-1973) grew up in the tobacco-growing region of
southern Kentucky known as the Black Patch. She married at an early age and,
because of economic necessity and religious commitments, moved with her
husband to Utah, back to Kentucky, then to Arizona, and finally to
California. Along the way she became committed to preserving the rural,
southern folkways she had experienced as a child. She became a folk poet and
self-taught artist. In the 1940s she began writing her autobiography.
Effie's story is a charming memoir of her spirited childhood on a poor
tobacco farm. She describes a wide variety of folk practices from healing
and crafts to children's games. A convert to the Mormon Church, her account
of southern Mormon missions contributes to the little-known record of the
Mormon church's attempts to establish a presence in the South. Out Of The
Black Patch is a fascinating, engaging, candid, informative autobiography.
