Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
In a posting I sent last night, I knew I made one error--WUIT instead of
QUIET. But there was another
error--Cornelius I was born in 1936, not 1939. Sorry for these errors. BC
List
I have already had two emails with questions, so I'll go ahead and try
to answer them for the list.
First, it was never established that Gwin/Guein's maiden name was
Corem. That is an assumption made by the early researchers. It came
from Cornelius' will naming his daughters Marcy Corem, Elizabeth Evans,
Catherine Richards and Mary Richards. Since Corem was a surname they
seem to have assumed that it was Marcy' middle name and she was named
after her mother's maiden name; however, Corem was Marcy's married
name, just as Evans was Elizabeth's married name, and Richards was the
married name of Catherine and Mary. In his will Cornelius used the
married names of all his daughters. Also I've been doing a lot of
historical research and it wasn't until several generations later that
people began giving their children middle names.
What bothers me is that we all have just taken the information we were
given, without documentation, and have accepted it without question.
Well, I'm going to question it. I started out just hoping to find
Gwin's maiden name. Jane McDaniel is another example. We know her first
name is Jane and we know that she was the mother of the children we
have, but nobody seems to know where the McDaniel came from. It's
probable that it came from a McDaniel will naming her as Jane Carmack
wife of William, or something like that. I plan to work on that too,
but one thing at a time.
As to a woman's dower rights. Dower is the portion of a deceased
husband's real property allowed by law to his widow for life. Under
English and American common law, the widow is entitled to one third of
the husband's property during her lifetime.
According to the woman at the Hall of Records, women's dower rights were
strictly protected by colonial law.
There's a very good chance that at least one of the deeds might give us
a clue as to who Gwin was, as it was the custom for a member of the
wife's family to witness the deed in order to protect her rights.
As to the tombstone inscription giving Cornelius'date of birth as 1739,
the births of William and Jane's children are documented. William and
Jane Carmack's daughter was baptized in Cecil County Maryland on July 2,
1733. (Pioneers of Old Monocacy-The Early Settlement of Frederick
Maryland by Grace L. Tracey and John P. Dern-Repository St. Louis Public
Library, St. Louis, Mo) The following children are listed in the
records of All Saints Parish, Frederick County, Maryland; CORNELIUS
born Jun 18, 1736; William born Nov 10, 1738; Evin (that's the spelling
in the record) born Feb 25, 1740; John born May 12, 1742; Nathan born
Nov 17, 1748 (this is the only record found for Nathan); Levi born Nov
3, 1750 and Quilah (again this is the spelling in the record) born Jan
13, 1754. (Earliest Records of All Saints Parish, Frederick, Maryland
1727-1781-Maryland Records by Gaius M. Brumbaugh-Repository St. Louis
Public Library, St. Louis, Mo)
Hope this helps.

Don't have a birthday for Jane, but on Lettice, I have the following
information:
In trying to establish my connection to Cornelius (born 1759) for DAR, I
obtained information
from a member of the Rolling River DAR in Tennessee as follows:
From GONE BUT NOT WUIT FORGOTTEN, Pickett County Cemeteries by Richard
Pierce. "IN THE LATE 1960'S OR EARLY 1970's, THE FOLLOWING MEMORIAL
STONES WERE ERECTED IN THE "POP" SMITH CEMETARY."
CORNELIUS CARMACK I 1739 1824
REVOLUTIONARY WAS SOLDIER
MARGERY JANE EVANS CARMACK 1738 1840
WIFE OF CORNELIUS I
CORNELIUS CARMACK II 1759 1840
REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIER
LETTICE MCMILLIAN CARMACK 1762 1842
WIFE OF CORNELIUS CARMACK II
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION MAY/MAY NOT BE RELATED
SISANNAH CARMACK LIVINGSTON 1777 1854
WIFE OF HENRY LIVINGSTON 1764 1834
REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER
The cemetary is in Pickett County (which was once in Overton County)"
This is the only reference I have found for a last name for Lettice, but in
her
final resting place, McMillian was used. That's good enough for me. Beth

Dale and List,
I was going to hold on to this information for a little longer, but
since everyone is listing Cornelius and Guein as the first in our lines,
I'll go ahead and post it.
Gwen Carmack relinquished her dower rights in 1741 when Jonathan Jones,
who was in Chester County, Pennsylvania, conveyed "Jonathan's
Inheritance" to William Smith of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. (Md
Liber HWS#1a-75.522)
"Jonathan's Inheritance" was a 100 acre plantation in CECIL COUNTY,
MARYLAND, which was patented to Jonathan Jones on 7 July 1725.
(PL6/252;ILA/523)
I am in the process of acquiring these documents.
I talked to a very helpful woman at the Hall of Records in Annapolis,
Maryland and she confirmed what I suspected. In order for Gwin to have
dower rights to "Jonathan's Inheritance" she had to be married to the
first Jonathan Jones, if not in 1725, then sometime after that and
between 1741. The Jonathan Jones who sold the land in 1741 was probably
Gwin's son.
I have yet to locate a will for the first Jonathan Jones, but they are
going to search the records for me. It would be interesting to know
when he died; however, the significance to us is that, although Gwin was
married to Cornelius at the time of his death, she was not the mother of
his children as they were all born prior to 1725.
Something I hadn't thought about until recently is that there were no
females in the line named Gwin. There are numerous ones named Jane and
Margery. So who was Cornelius' first wife and the mother of the
children?
My line is:
Cornelius Carmack and Unknown
William Carmack and Jane McDaniel
Cornelius Carmack and Margery Evans
John Carmack and Unknown
Lewis Carmack and Rebecca Cagle
Charles Carmack and Mary Payne
Jesse Carmack and Tressie Rose
William Carmack and Juita Bigham
Judy Carmack French
Christopher Carmack (I just like to count this guy just in case he is
Cornelius's Father)...
Cornelius (1681) & Guein COREM
William (1716) & Jane MCDANIEL
Cornelius (1736) & Margery Jane EVANS (1736)
Cornelius (1759) & Lettice (Unknown)
John Wesley (1803) & Susan CARR (1804)
John Wilson (1833) & Nancy Jane DAMRON (1840)
Joseph Mark (1862) & Lena Caroline McNUTT (1869)
Robert Jay (1894) & Cora Ellen BYRD (1897)
Norman Alonzo (1935 & Josephine Helen BROWNE (1940)
Did we ever get a last name for Lettice above and date of birth for
Jane McDaniel ??
Where IS everybody?? Get that Roll Call in! Let's connect the limbs
to this tree!!
Best wishes to all..
