"WPA Records, for the most part, carbon copies of the original that was
typed on onion skin paper during the Depression. Since these records were
typed on poor machines by people who did not type well either and read by

less than perfect. Yet every attempt has been made to make as good a copy as

Hello all,
Is there any interest among the group in helping me create a web page
showing pictures of our oldest Carmack's? Those interested can either send
me a copy of a picture and let me scan them or send me an electronic copy
and I'll put them on my web site? I do not really want a hard copy picture
but would be willing to return any sent to me after I scan them. I could
then lay them out on a web page and identify the current family descendant
of that ancestor. Thoughts?

I recently found three early Overton Co., Tennessee land grants of
interest while viewing some early Overton Co. land deeds on microfilm.
These grants are to Jesse Carmack and name him as assignee of the heirs
of James R. Whitney and Thomas Wade. I believe this is Jesse C. ( 1769
) and I believe the Cornelius mentioned in two of the grants is his
father, Cornelius ( 1736 ).

I found the following on the Anderson List. John and Cornelius Carmack are
listed in this, thought someone else might be interested in it. I did not
find any Carmack's in district 6 or 7, just 8 and 9. There is also a
William CORMACK and a Willie B. CORMACK (in district 8) which may be a typo,
I don't know.

Thanks Ronnie,
The only other notes on John I have are:

1801 For Hawkins County, Tennessee Transcribed by Mildred Collins Wasser.
George Maxwell, John Long, Nathanil Henderson, William Armstrong, Joseph
McMinn, Alexander Nelson, Thomas Jackson, John Gordon, David Larkin, James
Berry, Mark Mitchell, Thomas Lee, James Lathim, William McCarty, James
Armstrong, Benone Caldwell, Absolom Looney, H+John Mitchell and David
Kinkead; Commissioned Justices of the Peace May 6th 1796.
John Carmack Commissioned an ensign in the regiment of Hawkins County,
during good behaviour September 16th 1798.
Reading this now I must have tped it incorrectly as I do not know what the
"H+" is supposed to be, if anything. And I do not understand the last
sentence on his commissioning...during good behavior...
I do not have any of the children from this marriage.

>From Families of Washington Co. and Bristol Va. 1776-1996, page 102,
article 226. Cornelius Karmic, a resident of Washington Co. Va. for
about forty years, was born 18 June 1736 in Prince George's Co.,
Providence of Maryland, and raised near a settlement called Cunakajig. He
was the third great-grandfather of this writer's
husband, John Curtis Carmack, of Ponca City, Oklahoma. Cornelius was
one of eighr children of William and Jane McDaniel Carmack. His siblings
were Sarah, William, Evan, John C., Nathan, Levi and Elizabeth.
He married Marjory Jane Evans 26 October 1756 in Frederick Co.,
Maryland. Their children were: Corneluis Carmack (8 January 1756-1857)
Frederick Co. Maryland. William Carmack (5 January 1761-24 September
1851) married Mary Catherine Hartsock; Joseph Carmack (11 April
1763-1798); Jane Carmack (7 June 1765-1825) married Thomas Henry, son
of John Henry; Sarah Carmack (August 1767-1 October 1792) married Hugh
McGee; Jesse C. Carmack (1769-1834/5) of Overton Co. Tenn., married Ann
Black, a Cherokee Indian;
Margery Carmack (1771-) married John Grimes; John Carmack (1773-)
residence Bledsoe Co. Tenn.; Elizabeth Carmack (1776-) married James
Henry (1765-1825) brother of Thomas Henry; Susannah Carmack (1777-1857)
married 21 March 1793 in Wythe Co. Va., Henry Livingston (1 March 1764-22
May 1834)
youngest son of William Todd and Sara Livingston. Corneluis served as
Justice of Washington Co. 1777-1780. His sons served in many
capacities. During the Revolutionary Way Corneluis served in the Va.
Line as did his sons William, John and Joseph. He drew his pension in
Overton Co. Tenn., dying there in July 1824 with burial in Carmack
Cemetery near Livingston. As was customary at that time, large slabs of
limestone covered the grave site of the head of the family with smaller
irregular pieces marking other graves. (note picture) Eighteen decendants
attended the rededication service of the Carmack Cemetery on 13 July
1985. Four of the five Carmack sons were represented, and Lois (Carmack)
Gunn of Watertown, South Dakota, was the sole representative of the
Joseph Carmack line. One can imagine the anguish Marjory and Corneluis
experenced when their daughter Susannah, the recent bride of Henry
Livingston, was among the captives of the infamous Shawnee half breed
Benge. For years Benge plundered and killed families near Fort
Blackmore. He was killed by Vincent Hobbs and his captives rescued by a
search party. Joseph Carmack (11 April 1763-1798) born in Frederick Co.
Maryland, was reared and educated in Washington Co. Va. He married there
in 1790 to Mary McMillian. Her father, William McMillian, was a tailor
and native of Scotland. He married Mary Leeper in NOrfth Carolina. He
died 1809/10 in Washington Co. Va.
The children of Joseph and Mary Carmack were: Francis McMillian Carmack
(1791-1798); John Carmack (January 1794-19 July 1818) unmarried;
Corneluis Carmack (1795-1851) (see story); Joseph Carmack, Jr.
(1798-1798).
During the War of 1812 Joseph was an Ensign in the Washington Co. Va.
Milita. As new territories opened, Joseph (a farmer and surveyor) moved
to Sumner Co. Tenn. He stayed there one year, then settled three miles
southeast of Springfield on Wartrace Creek in Robertson Co. His unmarked
grave is there in the old Carmack Family Cemetery. In his will, dated 20
October 1798, probated 1799, he names as beneficiaries his wife, Mary,
and children, John, Cornelius and Joseph Jr.
Joseph's widow the married James Bell. Their children were: Walter,
Leander, James Jr., William, Margaret married William Roe, and Polly
McMillian Bell. Mary also buried in the Carmack Family Cetemery.

Jim,
I have heard this from Agnes before too but there has been no evidence that
I am aware of. Certainly enough coincidences though. Jesse Ann Carmack, of
Bledsoe Co, TN, married Martha (last name unknown) and they lived in Bledsoe
before moving to Washington Co, TX. I wonder if there was a Martha Rainey
in any census. According to the 1860 TX Census she would have been bore
about 1803. However, the same Census looks like they have her born in GA
but it's difficult to read.

Dale,
In recent msgs. about John Carmack, was an Elizabeth Rainey mentioned?
For some reason a few days ago, the thought struck me that it had. The
reason I ask is that in the 1860 Henry Co. Census, an Eliz. and an
Esther Rainey aged 57 and 55 respectively were living with William and
Sarah Carmack. John Carmack, William's father had been living with them
in 1830 and died there in 1833. This led Agnes Jones to wonder if there
were some connection between the Carmacks of Henry and Bledsoe Co.
because John of Bledsoe Co. lived on the Rainey Turnpike. From what I
have seen on the net I didn't think so. It looked like the John or
Johns of Bledsoe were well documented and my John still a mystery: but,
I thought I would give you Agnes' observation. Jim

Mary Ann,
The only reference I have for Jesse born in VA was from the 1840 TN Census.
As for John, I agree that it is a good assumption that John married in VA.
Early Settlers of Lee Co, Va. & Adj. Counties, vol 2. states John Carmack
was living in Bledsoe Co., Tenn. after removing from Washington Co., Va.
But in everything I have looked for I have found no other reference to this
John Carmack in Washington Co, VA.

Dear Everyone
Thanks for the information on Elizabeth Carmack and James
Henry. I love this family history work and wish I had more time to
work on it.
Dale, thanks for the information from the family tree maker. i will
defiantly see what I can find. Also, Dale, you have given the
information that Jesse Carmack was born in VA. Did you get this
information off a census. If Jesse was born in VA, then I would
assume that John was married in VA???
I feel sometimes that I have more questions than answers, but then
that's the fun of the chase.
Thanks again everyone for the help.

Dear Dale
I copied the information off the family tree maker of John Carmack
married to a Fanny. A Jerald Brown sent me what he had on John
Carmacks. There is a John Carmack of Hawkins Co., TN 1850
census married to a Fanny. He was listed as 75. I know this is not
our John, but this could be where this person got this information.
Just a thought.
Thanks Jerald for the information.

Thanks Jerald. It looks like the John Carmack and Fanney you listed below
in the 1850 Census is probably the same as the reference I posted last
night, though a different John Carmack (not the John of Bledsoe).
Thanks again,
