Dale and Agnes,
Mary Ann's information shows Elizabeth Carmack Lamb's husband being born
in Pennsylvania. Wasn't there a Carmack in Pennsylvania about the same
time as Cornelius (1681) was in Maryland? Could Elizabeth be from that
branch of the Carmacks?

I took up geneaology after my husband died in 1989. He had left charts
of John and William's family, sons of Cornelius.
He has a reference of a letter REV Isaac Burton of Jefferson Cty, TN to
his nephew
1821. (I wonder if the Burton should be Barton?)
He has 2 facts: John born 1710 and he married Elizabeth Barton.
Before he died he was working closely with Agnes Jones but I can't
locate her
email address.

Hi,
After talking with Dale Carmack, he thought I should post the
following information for anyone whose ancestors hailed from the East
TN, SW VA territory.
I have two ledgers from my grandfather's General Store, dated
1908/1909/1911. He was William Floyd Rowlett. His store was located
beside Big Spring Union Baptist Church, established 1856, in Claiborne
Co, TN, near the Lee Co, VA border. Pages of the ledgers showed running
charge accounts for individual customers. The following names are
listed in the ledgers. I am including other family names because many
of these families intermarried. Do you recognize any of them?
CARMACK: Hannah/M.L./Neal/W.C.
YEARY: Henry/Isaac
ROWLETT: Arry??/Henry/Ire/Jasper/John/Lawney(Lonnie)/Lawrence
/Silles(Silas)/W.L.
ESTEP: Clint/Garrett/Harve/Siles(Silas)
There are other names listed in the ledgers. If you are interested
in any of them, let me know.
Also, those of you who have been involved in research on the
BALL/YEARY/CARMACK families, please note:
In Bonnie Ball's publication, "The Region Around Cumberland Gap, TN", I
noticed a photograph of a sign that stands (or stood) along the side of
the road near Ewing (Lee Co), VA. It reads:
"JOHN BALL, 1755(6)-1809, PIONEER SETTLER OF LEE COUNTY, REVOLUTIONARY
SOLDIER, JUROR, AND SURVEYOR. HELPED SELECT ROAD FROM MARTINS STATION
TO CUMBERLAND GAP. BURIED SOUTH OF HER AT MOUTH OF CAVE. HIS WIFE WAS
"POLLY" YEARY. HIS GRT-GRANDSON, P.M. BALL (1837-1927) WAS A
CONFEDERATE SOLDIER. Appr. by the Lee County Board of Supervisors.
Sponsored by Descendants of John Ball."
John's birthdate was difficult to read, but I believe it said either
1755 or 1756.
My grgrgrandfather was Levi Carmack, b. 1791, d. 1866. My grgrandfather
was Enoch Carmack, b. 1836, d. 1863. My grandmother was Amanda Carmack,
b. 1862, d. 1938, married William Floyd Rowlett, b. 1857, d. 1942,
VA/TN.
I'll be glad to provide information concerning my ancestors.

The following may be of interest to some.
Only attribution I have: "List of private claims presented to the House
of Representatives of the United States from the 1st to the 31st
Congress, inclusive." (pages 271 and 272)
Carmack, Cornelius, (Ala) Compensation to volunteers under his command
for services in Creek Indian War. 24th Congress, 2nd session, page 160
of journal, referred to committee on Military Affairs. No record of
action taken.
Carmack, Issac Compensation for horse lost in United States service,
war of 1812. 26th Congess, page 1009 of Journal, Claims committee,
action taken, tabled. (Issac was persistant. He applied again in the
27th Congess, page 73 of Journal, again it was tabled.
Carmack, John Revolutionary pension, this was a resolution rather than
a petition as the other three were. It carried over to the second
session, but was postponed. (pages of Journal 115, and 300.
Dale,
I'm been meaning to put this in writing for some time. When I began the
search for Lewis' father, all I knew about Lewis was that he was born in
Tennessee and according to numerous family members his parents crossed
the Cumberland Gap and settled at the foot of the mountains, where he
was born.
At that time I did not know that the 1820 Census Records for East
Tennessee did not exist. There were seven Carmacks in Middle Tennessee
and of those seven there were only two that had sons in the age bracket
of Lewis. They were Cornelius Carmack and James Carmack, both in
Overton County. Since that time I have acquired the families of all 7
of the men in that Census and Lewis wasn't one of their children.
Then I happened to find the "Early East Tennessee Taxpayers" by
Pollyanna Creekmore and "Index to Early Tennessee Tax Lists". These two
books were written to compensate for the loss of the 1820 East Tennessee
Census. "Early East Tennessee Taxpayers" listed a John Carmack,
Cornelius Carmack and William Carmack all in Hawkins County, Tennessee.
This John Carmack was the son of Cornelius Carmack who was born in 1681
in Maryland. The other two men were his descendants. Also, Hawkins
County is on the east side of the mountain and Lewis was born on the
west side. In the "Index to Early Tennessee Tax Lists" there were three
more Carmacks, Aquilla in Davidson County, John in Sullivan County, and
John in Bledsoe County. Of these, Davidson and Bledsoe are both on the
west side of the mountain where Lewis was born. I had the children of
Aquilla, so I knew it wasn't him. That left John in Bledsoe County,
which perfectly fit the family story of Lewis being born at the foot of
the mountains. John lived on the Cumberland Plateau. You can't get
much closer to the foot of the mountains than that.
I began to search Bledsoe County and found "Bledsoe County, Tennessee-A
History" by Elizabeth Parham Robnett. In the appendix under "Indain
Wars-Cherokees and Seminoles 1836-38" it lists Lewis Carmack and his
brother-in-law David Cagle, associating Lewis with Bledsoe County.
It is an accepted fact, that at that period in time, people married
someone within five miles of where they lived and most of the time
married a neighbor or a first cousin. Since Charles Cagle, Rebecca's
(Lewis' wife) father was a neighbor of Jesse Carmack (who I believe is
Lewis' brother) and also lived very close to John Carmack, it made it
possible for Lewis and Rebecca to met.
With the new information concerning William and Sarah Carmack, it
further convinces me that Lewis is John's son. (William and Sarah both
fit two of the children of John in the 1830 Census.
Also, it would seem that Lewis followed the naming practices of the
time. His first son was named John (which would have been after his
father), his second son was named Charles (after his Wife's father who
was named Charles) and his next son was named Jesse (after his oldest
brother).
My feelings are that unless there was a Carmack in Tennessee in the
early 1800's that hasn't been found (and that doesn't seem very likely)
there doesn't seem to be any other conclusion than that Lewis is John's
son.
The early records that were found in the Bledsoe County Courthouse attic
are almost cataloged and ready to be microfilmed. It would be wonderful
if there would be a document found that links Lewis to John. If not,
then the only other proof (if there is any) has to be somewhere in the
family. It would be great to have documented evidence, however I
personally believe there is enough circumstantial evidence to accept as
fact that John is Lewis' father.
I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks.

Dale,
The book you are referring to is "Bledsoe County, Tennessee-A History"
by Elizabeth Robnett. In the Appendix, it shows Indian Wars-Cherokees
and Seminoles-1836-38 and lists Lewis Carmack and David Cagle.

I don't recall seeing this, do you have the birthdate for this John Carmack?
Was it listed in the email? I do not have an Elizabeth Dines in my data but
if this is John born Bet. 1751 - 1757 and died April 03, 1833 I'd like to
know it too.

Seeking parents of Mary Ann Harmon.

My gr-grandfather was John Carmack. He is buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery,
Overton Co., Tn. His headstone reads: John Carmack, SR, Born November 1818,
died January 18, 1894. John md. Mary "Polly" Elam. They were the parents of my
grandmother Mary Tennessee Carmack Brown, born September 10, 1845, died
August 3, 1924.
I cannot find a John Carmack, Jr. Can anyone help me. Also, Carmack Cousins
Newsletter, Vol. 111, No. 1 has John listed as John Jackson Carmack. I cannot
find his middle name listed anywhere else as Jackson.
My sincere and forever thanks to Agnes Jones for all of the information she
provided me on my Carmacks. I did not even know where my grandparents were
buried until she walked with me to the cemetery at Old Union. Thanks, Agnes!
Happy New Year to all Carmacks!

How sure are we about the crest. I have gone through a lot of books and

I have updated my Home Page (http://www.hsanet.net/user/dcarmack/) to add
some new things. Changes are as follows:
1. I added a new page that contains some of the different Family Crests that
I have seen or received. If anyone wants to add to it please send me a copy
and I'll put it on the page.
2. I created a new Board on GenConnect for Wills
(http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/CarmackWill). This
page is for posting Wills only, please do not post queries on this page. I
started it off by placing Cornelius Carmack's, born 1681, Will.
3. I updated the Message Boards page
http://www.hsanet.net/user/dcarmack/msgboard.htm.
4. A short time ago I added a page for pictures so we can see who everyone
is. I started it off with myself, a rather bad picture that I will replace
when I get a better one. If anyone else would like to send me a small
picture I can add it to the Cuzzin's page. If you want any bio wording then
send it along with the picture. Don't be shy!
If you have any comments for additional things then send them along and I'll
try to incorporate them assuming they are not outside of my ability and
schedule to do.
Happy New Year!
